Jewel-Osco Awards 62 Academic Scholarships

  Forty-Two Year Old Program Salutes Employees who Balance Work and Studies

    MELROSE PARK, Ill., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Jewel-Osco announced today the
62 winners of the annual Jewel-Osco scholarships.  Now in its 42nd consecutive
year, the joint Jewel and Osco program will award nearly $60,000 in
scholarships this year.
    Through the program, Jewel-Osco awards $500 or $1,000 scholarships to
recipients pursuing higher educational degrees.  Osco Drug also awards two
additional $5,000 scholarships to pharmacy students.
    Recipients were nominated by their Jewel-Osco managers for extraordinary
job performance, community involvement, academic achievement, school
involvement and leadership.  A four-person scholarship committee made up of
local academics and Jewel-Osco executives chose the winners.
    In 1970, current Jewel-Osco President Greg Josefowicz received a Jewel
scholarship for his academic achievement, community involvement and
leadership.

follow in my footsteps as leaders of the Jewel-Osco team."

    One special $1,000 Jewel/Lee Williams scholarships was presented to Paul
Jones of Chicago.  Lee Williams, a former Jewel employee and Lane Technical
High School graduate, established the scholarship as a way to acknowledge the
impact his education and his years working at Jewel had on his life.
Recipients of this award attend Lane Tech in addition to being Jewel part-time
associates.
    The scholarship fund is one of 10 education and mentoring programs
annually sponsored by Jewel-Osco to provide financial assistance and jobs to
Chicago-area students.  Jewel-Osco has invested nearly $2 million in hundreds
of working students during the 1998-99 school year.
    During its one hundred-year history, Jewel-Osco has been noted for its
philanthropic spirit.  Every year, the company supports a wide variety of
charitable organizations with the focus on education, food & nutrition and
health.  In addition, Jewel-Osco associates continue to contribute generously
to support the United Way and the communities they serve.  In all, over
$2 million is contributed toward these efforts.  It's all part of Jewel-Osco's
