Joseph P. Campanelli Elected Chairman of Massachusetts Business Roundtable

         Annual Meeting Elects Slate of Officers for Two-Year Term

    BOSTON, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Joseph P. Campanelli, President and CEO
of Sovereign Bank New England and Vice Chairman of Sovereign Bancorp, was
elected Chair of the Massachusetts Business Roundtable during its annual
meeting today at Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems headquarters in
Tewksbury. He succeeds Thomas J. Hynes, Jr., President of Meredith & Grew,
Inc.
    Other officers elected to a two-year term include: Vice Chairmen Ted
Kelly, Chairman, President and CEO, Liberty Mutual and Michael Ruettgers,
Special Advisor and Retired Chairman, EMC Corporation; Treasurer Michael
Costello, Office Managing Partner, PricewaterhouseCoopers; and Secretary
Harold Hestnes, Senior Partner, Wilmer Hale.

on a wide variety of issues critical to our state's future," Campanelli

    Mr. Campanelli assumed the title of Chief Executive Officer for
Sovereign Bank's New England division in January of 2005. He was appointed
Vice Chairman of Sovereign Bancorp in 2002. In this role he has total
responsibility for all bank operations in the New England region. He serves
as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Tufts-New England Medical Center
and plays a leadership role with the United Ways of New England as Chair
for the organization's 2006 fund drive. Campanelli is a director of the
Boys and Girls Club of Boston, President of the Boston Minuteman Council of
the Boy Scouts of America, and is on the Board of Trustees of the Boston
Museum of Science.
