EMS Enters New Retail Market Space With Software Suite Powered by BEA

EMS Embeds BEA WebLogic Server in Enterprise Software for Retailers

    SAN JOSE, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the world's leading application
infrastructure software company, today announced that Efficient Market
Services, Inc. (EMS), the leading provider of technology solutions to enhance
visibility into consumer demand, has embedded BEA WebLogic Server(TM) into its
consumer demand management solutions.
EMS enables retailers and consumer-packaged good trading partners, such as
Albertson's, General Mills, Pepsi and Vons, to better understand, predict and
react to consumer demand. The efficiencies gained from such visibility enable
companies to make quick and profitable decisions related to merchandizing and
replenishment, category, inventory and promotion management. EMS has
traditionally provided its solution as a service. The new BEA-powered
products allow EMS to move toward a business model geared to selling Web-based
enterprise software -- a model that EMS believes will be most effective in the
years ahead.
"As we prepare to enter the next phase in our company's growth, we need a
technology platform with extreme scalability, flexibility and Web savvy," said
Socka Suppiah, chief technology officer at EMS. "That's what BEA WebLogic
delivers. It's a great foundation for our new offerings and our clients will
realize enormous benefits. With 'BEA under the hood,' our new enterprise
software will give clients more timely and flexible access to all the robust
information that retail data warehouses can generate. DemandView and
DemandCast are taking our value proposition to a whole new level."
According to Suppiah, DemandView integrates daily product-movement data
with store-level causal factors such as product-display placement, advertising
activity and pricing. DemandCast allows retailers and CPG suppliers to
forecast store-level consumer demand for items under normal conditions and
during promotional periods. The tools help customers manage merchandizing and
replenishment, demand planning, store ordering, product allocation, store
inventory management, category and brand planning, and distribution.
"We're excited about the opportunities created by our new business model
and the BEA WebLogic Server has a lot to do with our optimism," said
Andy Winans, executive vice-president sales and marketing at EMS. "We're
redefining inventory management and merchandising for retailers. Our new
products will help increase same-store sales, drive profitability, and improve
the overall shopping experience for consumers. It takes a lot of technology
to make all that happen, which is why our BEA-powered software is so
valuable."
