FAA Exercises Contract Option with Raytheon to Continue Deployment Of Airport Security Equipment

BURLINGTON, Mass., May 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has exercised a one-year option to
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) under its existing Security Equipment
Installation (SEI) II contract to continue installation and integration
activities of explosive detection equipment at airports nationwide.
This contract option allows vital work to continue concurrent with the
Transportation Security Administration's selection of the winning team for its
multi-billion dollar Explosives Detection System/Explosives Trace Detection
General Contractor program. TSA's objective is to deploy and make operational
explosives detection systems at all 438 commercial airports in the United
States by Dec. 31, 2002. This is in accordance with the Aviation and
Transportation Security Act of 2001 mandate, which calls for 100 percent
screening of all checked baggage by the end of this year.
In 1999, Raytheon was awarded a five-year Security Equipment Integration
contract by the FAA to deploy explosives detection systems at airports across
the United States. This award followed after Raytheon performed successfully
on a three-year contract awarded in 1996. Under these contracts, Raytheon has
installed more than 185 explosives detection machines and 630 explosives trace
machines at more than 72 airports.
Under SEI II, Raytheon is currently conducting site surveys at 22 major
airports to include Seattle, O'Hare, Boston Logan, Orlando, Minneapolis and
Louisville. Raytheon has also been tasked to move forward with deploying CTX-
9000 fully integrated explosives detection systems for Jacksonville
International Airport. Earlier this year, Raytheon brought Salt Lake City
Airport to 100 percent checked baggage screening in time for the 2002 Winter
Olympics. Since that time, Raytheon has also deployed explosives detection
and explosives trace machines to bring the Mobile, Ala., airport to 100
percent.
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global
technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics, and
business and special mission aircraft.
