Rational Developer Network and Java Enhancements to Rational Rose,
Rational ClearCase and Rational Suite ContentStudio
Highlight New Version of Rational Suite
LEXINGTON, Mass., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational Software (Nasdaq: RATL),
the e-development company, today announced the release of Rational Suite(R)
v2001A that includes three new products -- Rational Developer Network,
Rational QualityArchitect RealTime, and Rational Test RealTime -- and
significant Java-oriented enhancements to Rational Rose(R), Rational
ClearCase(R) and Rational Suite ContentStudio(TM).
Rational Suite v2001A, the sixth synchronized release of Rational Suite in
30 months, also includes major new support for developers of embedded software
and upgrades to the other 15 tightly integrated products that comprise
Rational Suite.
Rational Developer Network (RDN) is a developer portal that delivers
targeted content to the Rational developer community. RDN delivers results
from Rational's e-development Accelerators(TM) initiative, including
information, training, best practices, and artifacts, tailored exclusively to
the worldwide community of practitioners who use Rational Suite. RDN editors
collect and commission articles, white papers, and other artifacts which, when
coupled with threaded discussions, provide members with an online forum for
learning and knowledge sharing. This capability is available to all Rational
Suite customers via the Rational Suite Team Unifying Platform.
"Like most development teams, we use any number of resources, such as Web
sites, user groups, and technical publications, when looking for answers to
complex development questions," said Chad Mason, manager, Quality Assurance,
Choice Hotels International (NYSE: CHH), the worldwide franchiser of Comfort,
Quality, Clarion, Sleep, Econo Lodge, Rodeway Inn and MainStay Suites brand
hotels. "And, like most teams, we spend valuable project time looking for
reusable artifacts and pursuing technical skill development. RDN brings
together in a single location the resources and training our teams need to
stay abreast of software development best practices to improve our
time-to-productivity by using Rational tools and methodologies. RDN also
gives us the opportunity to share our experiences with peers, and in turn
benefit from their contributions."
"Despite the pressures of today's business environment, organizations
continue to support their software development efforts for the future," said
Rikki Kirzner, research director at IDC. "Using a complete suite of
integrated software development products and services can provide companies
with a clear leadership advantage by improving the efficiency of their
development teams."
Java Support
Through integrations with the industry's leading Java integrated
development environments (IDEs), including IBM Visual Age for Java, Borland
JBuilder, and Sun Forte for Java, Rational Suite v2001A developers can
maintain synchronization between their code and visual models. Rational Rose
can automatically update Java source code in the developer's IDE of choice to
reflect model changes, and can automatically update the model to reflect
source code changes made in the IDE.
With Rational Suite, Java developers can now also use wizards to more
easily create software that uses powerful Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE)
technologies like Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs), Servlets, and Java Server Pages
(JSPs). These wizards enable developers to focus on developing and designing
by handling the low-level details.
Rational Suite v2001A also includes a new Rational ClearCase integration
with the Sun Forte for Java IDE, complementing existing integrations with
popular Java IDEs such as IBM VisualAge for Java and WebGain Visual Cafe.
These integrations provide developers with access to the power of Rational
ClearCase for Software Configuration Management (SCM) from within their IDE of
choice.
Rational Rose RealTime now enables embedded and real-time developers to
utilize Sun Microsystems' Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) platform. Rational Rose
RealTime significantly speeds J2ME development by automatically generating
complete Java executables directly from Unified Modeling Language (UML)
models.
"This release of Rational Suite provides tremendous added value for
Rational's customers," said Eric Schurr, senior vice president of marketing
for Rational Software. "Every Rational Suite user will benefit from the
Rational Developer Network. And, the large number of Rational customers
building Java software or embedded software will be able to build their
software faster and better with this new release."
Rational Test RealTime and Rational QualityArchitect RealTime
Supporting Rational's "Quality by Design" initiative, Rational Test
RealTime and Rational QualityArchitect RealTime are complementary products
that help accelerate time-to-reliability for embedded systems developers.
Rational Test RealTime automates testing of embedded, real-time and
distributed applications, managing the tedious and error-prone aspects of
implementing, deploying, executing, and managing an embedded test environment.
It addresses all test levels, from individual software and UML model
components to overall system testing, including unit, integration and
validation testing, on any host and for any embedded target.
Rational QualityArchitect RealTime generates unit and integration tests of
UML capsules directly from a Rational Rose RealTime model. This feature of
Rational Rose RealTime provides one notation (UML) for specifying testing
artifacts throughout the development process, fully automates test execution,
and generates comprehensive UML reports on execution.
Rational Suite ContentStudio
The new version of Rational Suite ContentStudio supports template
development using Java Server Pages. In addition, organizations can now
deploy to J2EE application servers, including IBM WebSphere Advanced and BEA
WebLogic.
