Aviron Elects Barbara Franklin to Board of Directors

    MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Aviron (Nasdaq: AVIR) today
announced that former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Barbara Hackman Franklin has
been elected to the company's board of directors, effective immediately.
    Ms. Franklin served as the 29th secretary of commerce and was the
highest-ranking woman in the administration of former President George Bush.
She currently serves as president and chief executive officer of
Barbara Franklin Enterprises, an international consulting and investment firm,
which provides counsel to American companies operating in foreign markets.
    Her career has included corporate, government, academic and
entrepreneurial activities. In 1984, she founded Franklin Associates, an
internationally recognized consulting firm, and served as its president until
1992. Earlier, she also served as senior fellow of the Wharton School of
Business of the University of Pennsylvania, as one of the first commissioners
of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, as staff assistant to the
president of the United States, charged with recruiting women for high level
positions in government, and in management positions at Citibank and the
Singer Company.
    Ms. Franklin has served as a director of 11 public companies and currently
serves on the boards of Aetna Inc., The Dow Chemical Company, Milacron Inc.,
MedImmune, Inc. and Watson Wyatt & Company. She currently chairs the audit
committees for Aetna and Dow and also will serve on Aviron's audit committee.
