Sovereign Donates $5,000 to Martin Luther King Center
NEWPORT, R.I., May 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sovereign Bank today
celebrated the grand opening of its newest community banking office in
Newport, RI. Located in the heart of Newport, the new branch features
walk-up and drive-up services and provides a full range of business and
consumer banking services.
"We are thrilled to open our first location in the city of Newport,"
said Steve Issa, New England South market CEO for Sovereign Bank. "We
believe our downtown location and our extended hours will help make banking
more convenient for Newport." Issa also noted that the new office is part
of Sovereign's planned reinvestment in the bank's branch system where
approximately three new community banking offices would be added in
southern New England by the end of 2008.
The new community banking office is located at 292 Thames Street in
downtown Newport and is supported by seven Sovereign team members including
community banking manager Diana Brown. The branch offers convenient banking
hours to customers, especially for downtown merchants, with extended hours
of operation. The banking office lobby will be open Monday to Thursday from
9am- 5pm, Fridays from 9am-6pm, and Saturdays from 9am-1pm.
In addition, the Newport banking office features a drive-up window that
is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30am-5pm, Fridays from 8:30am-6pm, and
Saturdays from 9am-1pm. The new banking office also features a walk-up ATM,
and a night deposit box. The building is handicapped accessible and parking
is available to customers. Approximately $2 million was spent on building
the new 2,800 square-foot branch.

community banking office. We look forward to working with customers to meet
their financial needs, whether it is to open up a free checking account or
to help them manage their business," said Brown.
The Grand Opening ceremony also included a $5,000 check presentation to
the Martin Luther King Center from the Sovereign Bank Foundation. Sovereign
presented the check to Amanda Frye Leinhos, executive director of the
Center. The Center provides a wide variety of educational, social, and
recreational activities to members of the community as part of the center's
mission to "promote personal growth and well being" for residents of
Newport.
The ribbon cutting ceremony was part of a week's worth of promotions
with festivities kicking off last week that featured "Kids Day," with Clyde
the Clam, face painting, and the Kids Ad Contest kickoff. In addition, WBRU
broadcast live with contest giveaways. Sovereign also gave away other
prizes such as tickets to the Sunset Music Fest, theme baskets from local
establishments and tickets for customers to attend Live with Regis and
Kelly, and performances at Newport Theatre and Trinity Theatre. For sports
fans, Sovereign gave away tickets to Boston Red Sox and Newport Gulls
games.
