Universal Interactive Expands Roster of Games Derived From J.R.R. Tolkien's Literary Epic 'The Lord of the Rings'

New Titles Announced for the PlayStation(R)2 Computer Entertainment System
                                  And the PC

    LOS ANGELES, E3 Booth #1200, South Hall, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal
Interactive, a studio of Vivendi Universal Games, has announced that it will
publish additional J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired video games.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," in development by
Seattle-based Surreal Software, is scheduled for release in fourth quarter
2002 for the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and the PC. An
action/adventure, the game features three members of the Fellowship as
playable characters.
In a storyline faithful to the first part of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic novel,
players relive the experiences of Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf as they journey
from the peaceful lands of the Shire through the darkness of Moria to the
River Anduin. On their quest to protect the One Ring from the Dark Lord
Sauron, players will explore the massive environments of Middle-earth while
solving puzzles and fighting enemies such as Orcs, Black Riders and an evil
Balrog.
"As source material for the creation of compelling interactive
entertainment, J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Lord of the Rings' is incomparable," said
Jim Wilson, president of Universal Interactive. "Universal Interactive's goal
is to create the most authentic 'Lord of the Rings' game experience possible
by drawing from Tolkien's intricate plot, expansive environments, and host of
unique characters. The new title unveiled at E3 this week will extend the
game's availability to an increased number of action/adventure gamers and
Tolkien fans."
As part of Vivendi Universal Games' long-term agreement with Tolkien
Enterprises, the company acquired the exclusive rights to develop interactive
entertainment based on selected Tolkien literary works. Universal Interactive
and Sierra Entertainment are responsible for developing products for the
license.
Universal Interactive is also scheduled to publish "The Lord of the Rings:
The Fellowship of the Ring" for the Xbox(TM) video game system from Microsoft
and the Nintendo Game Boy(R) Advance. Further information about Universal
