Actor/Environmental Leader Dennis Weaver Urges President Bush To 'Switch From Gasoline to Hydrogen' to Stop Poisoning the Air

    LOS ANGELES, May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Actor/environmental leader Dennis
Weaver issued a call to President George W. Bush today at the "Power Struggle
-- California's Energy Crisis" panel to move toward replacing gasoline with
hydrogen.
"America must stop polluting itself by fueling vehicles with gasoline. I
urge President Bush to form a new special commission to plan the conversion to
hydrogen. Hydrogen does not poison the air, and it is in everlasting supply,"
Weaver asserted.
Weaver's statement came at the luncheon sponsored by Women of Los Angeles
at The Four Seasons Hotel. He also is sending his request personally to The
President. He and his wife, Gerry, are founders of The Institute of
Ecolonomics, which has been active ecologically for ten years.
"The newly-announced energy program doesn't deal adequately with the awful
damage to our air and health that utilizing gasoline, a fossil fuel, is
doing," Weaver claimed. "President Bush's special commission should consist
of the most credible visionaries in business, the environmental movement,
politics and the scientific community, to design an energy policy that is
truly sustainable and healthy. Nothing is more important for our children."
Weaver, as president and co-founder with Gerry of the Institute of
Ecolonomics, for ten years has been encouraging businesses to profit while
cleaning up the environment. His non-profit group has members throughout the
U.S., publishes a newsletter, and has been honored for its achievements.
Ecolonomics is now taught at three colleges.
In November The Institute will conduct a hydrogen-fueled vehicles
expedition, The Drive for Life, with Dennis as one of the drivers, from Los
Angeles to Denver. It will call attention to the World Congress To Initiate
The Hydrogen Economy, co-sponsored by The Institute, to be held in Denver in
November.
Weaver, a Broadway, motion picture and television actor, is famed for his
long-running series "Gunsmoke," "McCloud" and other attractions; yet in
addition to his busy acting schedule he spends much of his time working to
"make the planet safer for our grandchildren -- and us."
The public may participate in Weaver's call by contacting President George
W. Bush at The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C.

Weaver has recently been seen on TNT starring in a new feature version of
"The Virginian," and on TBS in the new feature version of "High Noon." He is
host and narrator in Starz Encore's first hour-long production, "Hopalong
Cassidy: Public Hero #1," to be shown July 29.

Panel participants at The Four Seasons Hotel in addition to Weaver were:
Gary Ackerman, executive director, Western Power Trading Forum, a
spokesman for wholesale power generators.
Claudia Chandler, assistant executive director, California Energy
Commission, responsible for community outreach and websites.
Michael Shames, executive director, Utility Consumers Action Network,
consumer representatives.
Pamela A. Bass, senior vice-president, Custom Service Business Unit,
Southern California Edison.
Moderator was Ms. Val Zavala, vice president of news and public affairs,
television station KCET. Lynne Weaver is director of Women of Los Angeles, a
non-political community affairs group active in the greater Los Angeles area
since 1996.
