Moss Point Primary Care Clinic Emerges From Collaboration Among Project HOPE's Gulf Coast Partners

MOSS POINT, Miss., May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The international health
education and humanitarian assistance organization Project HOPE today
recognized its corporate supporters and partners that made possible the
return of healthcare to Moss Point, a community devastated by Hurricane
Katrina.
At the opening of Coastal Family Health Center's Moss Point Clinic on
Wednesday, Project HOPE's President and CEO, John P. Howe, III, M.D.,
thanked representatives present from Abbott Laboratories, Eli Lilly & Co.,
FedEx, Foundation of the Mid South, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson,
Merck & Co., Inc., Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Singing River Hospital and Hands
On USA.
To continue health improvements at Coastal Family Health Center (CFHC),
Project HOPE has received significant support from the Baxter International
Foundation, ExxonMobil, FedEx, and the Foundation for the Mid South.
Previous gifts from Fulbright & Jaworski, Johnson & Johnson, the Thomas
Anthony Pappas Charitable Foundation, and the Warburg Pincus Foundation and
thousands of individual donors enabled Project HOPE to send medical
resources with the hospital ship USNS Comfort in September.
"Our partnership is the reason Project HOPE has been able to assist
this region for the long term," said Dr. Howe. "As a legacy of the Project
HOPE volunteers who have served here since September, and consistent with
our work around the world, we are helping health providers of this
community create a facility that is nearby, sufficiently equipped, and
welcoming to all."
Following the work of 75 medical volunteers who served on shore and
aboard the USNS Comfort, Project HOPE entered a $1 million commitment to
the region in February, partnering with CFHC to establish the primary care
clinic, bring it into operation and, if possible, supply other clinics.
Merck & Co., Inc. supplied modular building units that now house CFHC
Moss Point Clinic. The gifts-in-kind provided by Project HOPE's corporate
supporters will furnish the clinic with antibiotics and analgesics, first
aid materials, blood pressure cuffs, and other medicines and supplies.
Due to Hurricane Katrina, the CFHC experienced significant staff
reduction and the loss of its headquarters. Four of nine clinics were
completely disabled or destroyed. Project HOPE is helping to ensure CFHC
can continue to provide services regardless of patients' ability to pay.
Project HOPE gratefully acknowledges the following partners who donated
their products to support its work in its Hurricane Katrina recovery
efforts, as well as the creation of the Coastal Family Health Center Moss
Point Clinic:
