WASHINGTON, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- BACKGROUND -- The U.S. Treasury
Department today announced it would no longer assess the 3% federal excise
tax on most long-distance telephone calls. Several federal courts had ruled
that the tax is illegal.
The following statement may be attributed to Herschel Abbott, BellSouth
Vice President Governmental Affairs:
"The government's announcement on the significant curbing of the
Federal Excise Tax on talking is wonderful news for consumers. Customers
should see a noticeable difference in their phone bills within the next few
months. We hope this decision is a harbinger of removal of other
discriminatory taxes on communications customers."
