American Stores Company Announces Quarterly Dividend
 
    SALT LAKE CITY, May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- The Board of Directors of American
Stores Company (NYSE: ASC) today declared a quarterly cash dividend on
American Stores Company common stock of 9 cents per common share.  The
dividend is payable July 30, 1999, to shareholders of record on July 15, 1999.
In anticipation of the pending merger with Albertson's, Inc., the Company and
Albertson's have coordinated and modified their respective dividend dates to
coincide.
