EL PASO, TEXAS, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN)
announced today that the El Paso Terminal Radar Approach Control facility at
El Paso International Airport in Texas has achieved operational capability
with the nation's first Full Service Standard Terminal Automation Replacement
System (STARS). The switchover from the legacy primary system to STARS Full
Service-1 (FS-1) was achieved on April 30, 2002, and FS-1 is now being used to
control live air traffic operations.
With the new STARS Full Service capabilities, the controllers at El Paso
are able to view aircraft targets from multiple radars including the airport
surveillance radar at the airport and two long range radars in Texas and New
Mexico.
"This is a significant step in the evolution of STARS," said Bill Voss,
director of the Federal Aviation Administration's terminal business service.
"This is the culmination of an extremely important joint development effort of
the FAA, Raytheon, National Air Traffic Controllers Association and
Professional Airways Systems Specialists. It initiates the deployment and full
capabilities and benefits of the Full STARS system. We look forward to
initiating the rollout of the Full STARS national deployment later this year."
Bob Eckel, vice president, Raytheon air traffic management systems, said,
"This milestone represents the start of transition from initial ATC display
modernization to true terminal area infrastructure modernization. By being
able to utilize data from multiple radars in the El Paso area, air traffic
controllers are immediately realizing the added safety and efficiency benefits
provided by the Full STARS system."
STARS is a modern, highly reliable, open architecture air traffic
automation system that provides new high resolution color displays, new
computer processing and communication equipment, six level display of weather,
multi-radar tracking and easy and rapid incorporation of new hardware and
software features. Full STARS systems are already in use at Eglin AFB and
McGuire AFB for the Department of Defense (DoD).
STARS is a joint procurement for the FAA and the DoD. Raytheon is under
contract to develop and install up to 173 STARS systems for the FAA and 199
systems for the DoD over the next decade.
With headquarters in Lexington, Mass., Raytheon Company is a global
technology leader in defense, government and commercial electronics and
