Fortis Health Stands Up for Choice and Affordability for Connecticut Residents

State Regulations Inapplicable, Favor 'One-Size-Fits-All' Health Insurance

MILWAUKEE, May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- In order to maintain choice and
affordability for the residents of Connecticut, Fortis Health announced today
that it has initiated an action with the Connecticut Department of Insurance
through its legal entity, John Alden Life Insurance Company. John Alden
provides group health insurance plans to Connecticut's small business owners.
The action comes as a result of the DOI's insistence that John Alden comply
with inapplicable statutes that create "one-size-fits-all" health insurance
coverages.
Although John Alden has attempted to resolve this issue with the
Connecticut DOI, the process has not been successful thus far; therefore John
Alden has been forced to seek resolution through formal action.
"Fortis Health is committed to providing insurance options that meet the
needs of Connecticut's small business owners and their employees. Our
customers and agents can be assured that we are working to ensure choice and
affordability," said Rob Guilbert, Vice President of Corporate Communication
for Fortis Health.
The Department of Insurance in Connecticut is asking insurers to include a
wide variety of inapplicable benefits in major medical policies that many
people do not want or need. This "one-size-fits-all" approach takes away
consumer choice and contributes to higher health insurance costs. "At a time
when Americans are faced with rising health care costs, we feel it's important
to work to ensure that all consumers have a variety of health insurance
options," concludes Guilbert.

    Noteworthy leadership, success record
Fortis Health has been instrumental in taking a leadership position to
ensure choice and affordability in other states -- most recently Kentucky and
New Hampshire. In both cases, legislation had created an economic equation
that left thousands of people without meaningful choices in health insurance
and in turn, dramatically higher premium rates. Fortis Health assisted the
states in developing new legislation that renewed competition and consumer
choice.
