MARLBOROUGH, Mass., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA, RTNB) successfully received U.S. Army Milestone III production
approval for the Air Traffic Navigation, Integration and Coordination System
(ATNAVICS) including a $3.3 million contract award for the first production
unit.
The U.S. Army's Aviation and Missile Command is procuring ATNAVICS to help
modernize its air traffic services. Raytheon was competitively selected in
April 1995 for pre-production activities and awarded a contract with
production options, which is currently valued at $130 million.
Mounted on two High Mobility, Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicles and two
trailers, the self- contained ATNAVICS provides rapid response key air traffic
control services at Army airfields and tactical landing sites. Designated by
the U.S. Army as the AN/TPN-31, the system comprises an S-band air
surveillance radar, L-band secondary surveillance radar/identification friend
or foe, an X-band precision approach radar, and Raytheon's AutoTrac air
traffic management system. These systems provide full surveillance out to 25
nautical miles and precision approach coverage out to 10 nautical miles in all
weather conditions. The ATNAVICS system architecture is flexible and can be
modified to meet other applications.
ATNAVICS is the only ground controlled approach and landing system
contained on tactical mobile vehicles that can be transported in a single C-
130 aircraft. It provides a rapid air traffic control response for both
tactical operations and civil disasters. The ATNAVICS has been fully tested
for operation in extreme environments and off-road transportability.
ATNAVICS is scheduled to begin delivery to the Army next year. In
addition, several military forces of international countries, as well as
elements of the Department of Defense, have expressed interest in ATNAVICS.
Raytheon has also developed the Army's new fixed base precision approach
radar (FBPAR), which is designated the AN/FPN-67. The AN/FPN-67 FBPAR, which
is identical to the precision approach radar used in ATNAVICS, will be
installed in permanent locations at Army airfields. The AN/TPN-31 is a
tactical system whereas the AN/FPN-67 is a fixed base system. The FBPAR was
recently flight certified and commissioned by the Federal Aviation
Administration and U. S. Army at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
Raytheon's air traffic control programs are managed by the company's
Command, Control, Communication and Information (C3I) Systems business unit,
based in Marlborough, Mass. Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a
