MARLBOROUGH, Mass., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company
(NYSE: RTNA; RTNB) has been awarded a contract by the Botswana Department of
Civil Aviation (DCA) for a radar data processing and displays system for
Gaborone International Airport and a remote tower system for Maun
International Airport.
Raytheon will provide an AutoTrac Radar Data and Flight Plan Processing
and Displays system equipped with six controller positions with high-
resolution displays and a tower system in Gaborone. In Maun, Raytheon will
provide a tower system linked to the Gaborone Area Control Center (ACC) that
will be capable of supporting independent operations using the local Raytheon
Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar supplied by an earlier contract. In
addition, the Gaborone ACC will be capable of performing hand-offs between
these two systems.
Increasing traffic in the Gaborone Flight Information Region, which
includes Maun airport and is one of the busiest regions in southern Africa,
has required Botswana to upgrade its existing system. The contract also
includes a voice switch, training and spares. Future expansion of its CNS/ATM
(Communication, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management) capabilities
may include follow-on orders for a simulator and an automatic dependent
surveillance system.
"Raytheon is proud to again be chosen by the DCA to upgrade the air
traffic management capabilities in Botswana," said Andrew Goldman, Raytheon's
vice president of International Air Traffic Management. "This is Raytheon's
latest success in the emerging African market for air traffic control systems
and services. The technological superiority, low risk and low life-cycle
costs associated with Raytheon air traffic management systems continue to be
recognized by customers around the world -- from the U.S. Federal Aviation
Administration, to Germany's DFS, to the Civil Aviation Administration of
China," he said.
Raytheon has successfully delivered and installed two ATC radar systems
for the Botswana DCA. These two state-of-the-art air traffic control radars
for the Gaborone and Maun airports became operational in January 1999. This
project included a primary and co-mounted secondary surveillance radar at
Gaborone International Airport, a stand-alone secondary surveillance radar at
Maun Airport, associated civil works, communications equipment, training and
spares. The S-Band all-solid-state primary surveillance radar (ASR-10SS) was
supplied by Raytheon Systems Canada Limited. The two monopulse secondary
surveillance radars (Condor Mk2) were supplied by Raytheon's U.K. subsidiary,
Raytheon Systems Limited. All the systems were installed by Raytheon Systems
Canada.
