Raytheon Delivers Ground Systems For Superbird-4 Satellite

DENVER, Colo., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTNA,
RTNB) has delivered both the primary and back-up tracking, telemetry and
command (TT&C) satellite ground systems to operate the Superbird-4 satellite.
Superbird-4 is a Hughes Space and Communications Company-built HS-601HP class
satellite which was launched Feb. 17. It will provide fixed and broadcast
satellite services for Japan, Northeast Asian Region and Oceania countries.
The ground system is constructed for Space Communications Corporation
(SCC), a premier Japanese satellite operator. Raytheon designed the Superbird-
4 satellite ground systems equipment under contract with Mitsubishi Electric
Corporation (MELCO), which, in turn, is under contract with Hughes Space and
Communications Company, El Segundo, Calif., for producing the ground system.
Under terms of the contract, Raytheon will augment a previous delivery,
the Superbird-C ground system, to operate the Superbird-4 satellite.
Raytheon's Space Systems business area previously delivered the Superbird-C
ground system. The augmentation includes additional TT&C software, Integrated
Telemetry and Command Units (ITCU-200), upgrades of the wide area network and
local area network as part of the site communication network, upgrades to the
ground status and control software and equipment, and upgrades of the payload
monitoring and in-orbit test equipment and software. The current contract
calls for augmentation of the system at the primary ground site, Space Port
East, located in Mito, Japan; the backup ground site, Space Port West, located
in Yamaguchi, Japan; and workstations at both SCC headquarters and Mitsubishi
Electric Corporation, located in Tokyo, Japan.
Raytheon also recently delivered the N-SAT-110 satellite ground system to
control a Lockheed Martin A2100 satellite for MELCO. This satellite is
scheduled for launch in the fall of 2000.
With more than 40 satellite ground stations worldwide and more than 30
years of experience in the field, Raytheon's Space Systems business area is
the global leader in providing geosynchronous satellite command and control
ground system solutions.
Raytheon Company, based in Lexington, Mass., is a global technology leader
