PITTSBURGH, PA USA
Industry's Only HFC-based VoIP Test Point Now in Trials

    PITTSBURGH, May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Tollgrade Communications,
Inc. (Nasdaq: TLGD), a leader in communications test and management
solutions for telecom and cable broadband service providers, announced that
its Cheetah(TM) CMD Series DOCSIS(R)-based Transponders have been awarded
PacketCable(TM) Release 1.0 "Verified for Interoperability" by CableLabs(R)
in the recently completed Certification Wave 42. Tollgrade DOCSIS-based
transponders, widely deployed to monitor power supply status and
performance within the HFC network, can now emulate a subscriber's E-MTA.
This enables cable operators to "actively sample" VoIP service performance
by verifying both VoIP signaling and call quality from an HFC-based test
point.

"The Cheetah CMD Series Transponders provide outstanding visibility
into the multi-layered HFC network," stated Greg Quiggle, Tollgrade's
Executive Vice President of Marketing. "By emulating a subscriber E-MTA,
Tollgrade currently provides the industry's only known VoIP service
assurance solution that originates and terminates calls at HFC-based test
points within a PacketCable network. Doing so replicates the customer's
VoIP service experience through the use of PacketCable telephony protocols
- including Network Call Signaling (NCS), Dynamic Quality of Service
(DQoS), and Security. This capability enables cable operators to remotely
and accurately isolate CPE, HFC, Ethernet/IP, CMS and Gateway troubles -
making the delivery of consumer VoIP services more reliable and
profitable."
    Tollgrade's VoIP-enabled DOCSIS-based transponders are currently in
active customer trials.
Brian Partridge, Senior Analyst at Yankee Group, stated, "This is a
timely release for Tollgrade as cable/MSO operators will now have access to
bi- directional, DOCSIS-based VoIP emulation and testing at a time when the
highly competitive broadband players are building out their VoIP subscriber
base. The VoIP-enabled transponder can help cable/MSO operators efficiently
manage their VoIP infrastructure requirements."
Tollgrade's Cheetah product line provides HFC, DOCSIS, and IP network
fault/performance monitoring solutions that enable cable operators to
significantly increase their plant operation efficiency. Cheetah systems
are designed to meet all of the cable operator's monitoring demands and
provide efficient end-to-end solutions that notify users of equipment
failure instantly, warn of impending service interruptions and verify
equipment status remotely.
