buttercreme frosting, confectionery artists at Jewel-Osco are creating the
ultimate customized cakes.
Through the use of a computerized decorating system, The Fresh Bake Shops
at Jewel-Osco are able to duplicate treasured customer photos on one-of-a-kind
cakes perfect for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other special
occasions. This state of the art technology is available at a network of
stores to serve all of Chicago-land.
Jewel-Osco food services vice-president, Nancy Chagares, said the
introduction of portrait cakes beginning June 2, is another example of how the
Melrose Park based retailer is leading the way in innovative consumer ideas.
"Our customers continually expect new and different ideas from out stores,

Chagares said. "Jewel-Osco takes pride in offering our customers breakthrough
technology and delicious cakes to make special occasions even more memorable."
Chagares said portrait cake possibilities are as vast as a person's
imagination, and photo album and ideas could include baby pictures for
birthdays, wedding photos for an anniversary, and graduation photos for
graduation parties.
Using state-of-the-art computer technology, a flat-bed scanner, and photo-
imaging software, Jewel-Osco confectionery artists can reproduce either color
or black-and-white photos as large as eight-by-10 inches on white-buttercreme
cakes with custom fillings.
Chagares said the images and its colors are reproduced using food coloring
applied in a way that is similar to an ink jet printer, and that depending on
the cake size, the process takes between ten and 20 minutes.
Prior to printing on assorted size sheet cakes, photos selected for
portrait cakes can be cropped or enlarged to requested specifications.
Messages can be placed on the portrait cakes using a variety of popular
computer-generated font styles, or by hand. All cakes can be accented with
customized trim and decorations.
"Our bakery people are very creative, and really excited about creating
portrait cakes," Chagares said. "The response has been great, and when people
see the cakes and the clarity of the image they are amazed."
