Group Cites Superior Sound Quality, Security, and Non-Interference
With Existing Medical Equipment As Key

ATLANTA, June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- GN Netcom announced today at SUPERCOMM
2003 that it has been selected by Intermountain Health Care Group to be the
standard equipment provider of wireless headsets for operating and emergency
rooms. The GN Netcom equipment won out thanks to its superior sound quality,
security, and non-interference with existing medical equipment.
Until recently, hospital professionals had to rely upon traditional corded
"desk-bound" telephones for fear that if wireless products were used, they
would disrupt important and possibly life-saving medical equipment. Without
the use of hands-free technology, valuable time was wasted waiting to receive
critical information needed for appropriate patient care.
Determined to overcome this, the Intermountain Health Care Group of Salt
Lake City, Utah, conducted extensive research and product comparisons,
resulting in the standardization of operating and emergency rooms at the
Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley, Idaho on GN Netcom equipment. The
equipment was also tested extensively at the McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden,
Utah.
"All devices in a hospital must be compatible to prevent disturbances in
frequencies that could potentially interrupt such sophisticated equipment as a
heart monitor or ventilator," said Landon Maxfield, telecommunications systems
administrator, McKay-Dee Hospital Group. "Our comparisons demonstrated that GN
Netcom's wireless headsets deliver unparalleled clarity and sound quality, and
works independently of other frequencies in use. By using the GN Netcom
headsets, physicians can now call for lab, radiology or pathology results
during a procedure without losing any valuable time by leaving the patient's
side and walking to the phone."
The GN Netcom family of wireless headsets leverage the Digital Spread
Spectrum protocol, initially developed for secure military communications.
The signal switches channels ninety times per second, providing security and
privacy while ensuring that the signal does not interfere with other signals
in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, such as increasingly popular WiFi networks. To
further enhance security and avert interception, GN Netcom's wireless headsets
feature digital encryption.
"GN Netcom's long-standing goal is to make communications in the workplace
as user-friendly, productive and secure as possible," said Tobe Cohen, senior
vice president, marketing, GN Netcom. "We're thrilled that this goal can be
applied to the healthcare industry, demonstrated by Intermountain Healthcare
Group's use of GN Netcom's family of wireless headsets. Our products have
helped improve efficiency and secure communications in the emergency room and
operating room."
