Pennsylvania State Police Ask for Continued Vigilance, Awareness of People Posing as Public Officials

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- State Police Commissioner Jeffrey
B. Miller today advised Pennsylvania residents to take steps to protect
themselves from potential dangers posed by people posing as law-enforcement
officers or other public employees.
"The public eye is an asset in helping with the Commonwealth's safety and
security," Col. Miller said.
He said the Department recently investigated the theft of two State Police
badges in Uniontown. In the Harrisburg area, he said, vehicle registration
plates were removed from Commonwealth vehicles while they were parked in a
private vendor's parking lot. The stolen badge numbers are 8351 and 5339.
The stolen registration plates are blue with white lettering and the plate
numbers are 25966PA and 25722PA.
Col. Miller said these types of crimes endanger the security of our
Commonwealth. The thieves may use these items to impersonate a police officer
or a public official. Anyone with information on the stolen badges or plates
is asked to contact their local police or the nearest State Police station.
The State Police offers the following tips to citizens: never invite a
stranger into your home that you have not planned to meet with; check with the
agency by telephone if an individual / employee wants to enter you home or
wants you to come outside with them. If you do not see any identification,
ask for it. If they cannot produce identification, contact the agency for
verification on the employee's position. Write down the registration plate
number of the vehicle they may be operating and get a good physical
description of the individual.
When asked, Troopers will provide a person with their name and badge
number and proper identification to verify their position. A Commonwealth
registration plate, in and of itself, does not identify any individual as a
public official. If the person cannot provide the proper identification
report the incident to the police.
The Pennsylvania State Police continue to aggressively investigate these
incidents and want to ensure the public that this Department is vigilant in
protecting and serving the citizens of this Commonwealth.
