Burger King Corporation has provided more than $400,000 in funding and
other support to enable each selected school to obtain materials to administer
the President's Challenge program and offer participating children the
opportunity to earn Presidential awards, such as patches and certificates, as
they strive for health and fitness goals through daily physical activity. The
President's Challenge program consists of a series of physical activity and
fitness criteria for which a child can earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle
Award (PALA) for 60 minutes of daily activity on five days a week for six
weeks or an award for their performance on a physical fitness test.
"We're pleased to partner with educators across the country through the
President's Challenge," said Brad Blum, chief executive officer of Burger King
Corporation. "This partnership allows us to help motivate and recognize
students for their efforts to be physically active on a daily basis. We want
to encourage American children to develop both sound eating and regular
physical activity habits to last the rest of their lives."
"Burger King Corporation has taken a leading role in increasing awareness
of and participation in the President's Challenge and in bringing the program
to a wider audience," said Lynn Swann, chairman of the President's Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports. "We applaud their continued progress in
providing the benefits of physical activity to kids through our unique
program."
In addition to its partnership with the President's Challenge, Burger King
Corporation has used other diverse platforms to educate kids about
incorporating physical activity into their daily routines. At
http://www.burgerking.com, kids can read instructions about fun outdoor games
and follow links to track their progress on the President's Challenge. In the
summer months, kids will also be able to enjoy more Kids Meal toys designed to
promote outdoor fun and physical activity.
In January 2004, Burger King Corporation's restaurant tray liners, kids
meal bags, birthday mailers and Adventures newsletters featured the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles(TM), giving kids fitness tips, encouraging them to get
involved in the President's Challenge and talking about the Presidential
Physical Fitness Award patch and Certificate.
