SUWANEE, Ga., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ARRIS (Nasdaq: ARRS) today
announced further details about its FlexPath Wideband(TM) Data product
portfolio. FlexPath is the ARRIS implementation of Wideband functionality on
its Cadant(R) C4(TM) CMTS platform and new Touchstone(TM) Wideband Modem
WBM630. Wideband data offers cable operators a solution to deliver business
and residential customers much higher bandwidth to compete with new
technologies such as VDSL and Fiber to the Home.
ARRIS was the first to demonstrate wideband capability at the National
Cable Telecommunications Association (NCTA) trade show in April 2004. Since
then, ARRIS has been continuously improving its FlexPath technology and is
currently in live trials with several MSOs. ARRIS FlexPath products use the
same Packet Bonding technique widely reported as the CableLabs(R) chosen
approach for DOCSIS(R) 3.0. DOCSIS channel bonding is an efficient way to
combine multiple DOCSIS channels together for a higher effective data rate to
the subscriber that is also backwards compatible to existing ARRIS Cadant C4
CMTSs. The FlexPath solution will be commercially available to cable
operators in Q4, 2005.
"DOCSIS channel bonding enables cable operators to offer data rates well
in excess of 100 Mbps to subscribers, which can surpass current DSL and FTTX
rates," says Yankee Group Senior Analyst of Broadband Access Technologies
Lindsay Schroth. "In North America, operators need a means to offer high data
rates for the commercial services arena while maintaining low operational
costs. In Europe and Asia, they need them to offer gaming, peer-to-peer
applications and media download capabilities. The ARRIS FlexPath Wideband
solution, commercially available in Q4 of this year, is at the forefront of
this new technology. Additionally, the Cadant C4 requires no additional
external hardware or equipment upgrade to integrate the FlexPath portfolio of
data products, which will make its deployment cost-efficient and simple."
The first release of the Wideband Cable Modem with FlexPath will support 4
bonded channels in both the Upstream and Downstream direct, and that number
will increase with subsequent releases. Four DOCSIS 2.0 channels bonded
together create over 100 Mbps in both directions, greatly surpassing xDSL data
rates. With this much bandwidth, operators can offer more bandwidth per
subscriber, enable commercial services, decrease CAPEX through large-scale
statistical multiplexing, and add new services like IPTV over DOCSIS and fast
video and large data file downloads. FlexPath will be deployable on the ARRIS
Cadant C4 CMTS through a simple software upgrade, and will work on existing
2D:12U and 1D:8U cable access modules (CAM's). Future releases of FlexPath
will plan to support up to 32 downstream channels in a bonding group enabling
downstream data rates of over one gigabit per second to a single node.

Technology Solutions, visit the ARRIS booth #6106 in Hall D, during SCTE
Cable-Tec Expo, June 14-17 in San Antonio.
