NEW YORK, June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On June 7, ThinkQuest NYC
(TQNYC) will mark the end of its 2005 Internet Challenge with a live
demonstration of the student-created websites at the historic Puck Building
from 3:30 - 6:00 PM. The event showcases the work of nearly 3,700 public
school students from New York City's five boroughs. Immediately following,
there will be an awards ceremony featuring a performance by Warner Music Group
newcomer pop group B5.
The Internet Challenge uses website design technology to build
self-confidence, knowledge, and teamwork to motivate young students to pursue
education and career opportunities in technology, science, engineering, and
math. ThinkQuest NYC's Awards Program recognizes the efforts of individuals
and corporations whose significant contributions are helping ThinkQuest NYC to
inspire technology and science learning in young students, their schools and
their communities. The 2005 Internet Challenge was funded by Advanced Network
& Services and Computer Associates (CA).
"At CA, we believe in building strong communities in which every
individual has the opportunity to succeed," said Anne Marie Agnelli, director,
community and public affairs, CA. "We are proud to support local non-profit
organizations who share our values and our commitment to building lasting
solutions."
TQNYC's annual competition invites teams of up to six students in grades
4-12 to work together using multimedia technology to create well-researched,
interactive, educational websites on an educational topic of interest to them.
Under the guidance of teacher-coaches, teams gather data, conduct research and
learn about the Internet as an educational medium while they build
educationally rich sites. The entries become a permanent part of the
ThinkQuest New York City Web Library and are available to teachers, students
and Internet users worldwide. Winning teams in each of three divisions will
receive laptop computers, digital cameras and gift cards donated by the Best
Buy NoHo store and gift certificates from Modell's Sporting Goods.
"Through its flagship Internet Challenge program, TQNYC prepares today's
young people to meet the challenges of tomorrow's workforce," says Edie
Weiner, chair of ThinkQuest, Inc., parent company of TQNYC. "We teach
critical thinking, problem solving and communications skills to a diverse
group of students, so that they will be better prepared for higher education
and more marketable to future employers. As importantly, we teach educators
how to use and integrate advanced technology into their curricula."
During the 2005 awards ceremony, which will begin at 6 p.m. on June 7,
Warner Music Group/Bad Boy Entertainment pop group B5 will present
Collaboration Award-winning students and coaches with laptop computers donated
by the Best Buy NoHo store located at 622 Broadway. In addition to the Warner
Music Group and Best Buy NoHo, which has designated June 7th as TQNYC Day,
other sponsors for the 2005 ThinkQuest NYC awards program include BOSE and
Modell's Sporting Goods.
Critical to the TQNYC mission is to provide training for teachers and
educators in schools and after-school programs to become team coaches. This
professional development experience enables TQNYC coaches to combine
curriculum with technology and provide project-based classroom or after-school
activities that engage their students. TQNYC's mission is to have a
significant impact on a school system that supports more than 1 million
children, their families and 80,000 teachers, and to provide 21st century
skills to the young people of New York City, cost-free, through in-school,
after-school and summer programs.
