Quintiles Laboratories Asia Enhances Services in China

    RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Quintiles
Transnational Corp. today announced that Quintiles Laboratories Asia (QLAB
Asia) has amended its existing agreement with Peking Union Medical College
Hospital (PUMCH) to enhance central laboratory services in China.
The new amended agreement with PUMCH enhances services for customers by
allowing Quintiles central laboratory (QLAB) facilities in China to operate
under the same standardized processes, controls and reporting mechanisms as
other QLAB facilities. Under the new arrangement, QLAB facilities in China
will have dedicated rooms for specimen management and analytical testing using
Quintiles' core instruments and globally harmonized processes that follow
global QLAB standard operating procedures and core quality standard.
Quintiles already operates the largest and most comprehensive central lab
testing facility in Asia at its Singapore base and has been providing central
lab services in China under the initial agreement with PUMCH signed in October
2003.
Anand Tharmaratnam, M.D., CEO of Quintiles Southeast Asia and QLAB Asia,
said: "The new agreement represents true growth and quality standardization of
our Asia central lab service. It consolidates our position as the most
comprehensive central lab group in Asia and very nicely complements our
clinical business, which is the largest pharmaceutical development group in
Asia."
Alan Ong, Vice President and General Manager, QLAB Asia, said of the
enhanced services: "QLAB Asia performed nearly a million tests in 2004, of
which 400,000 tests were for China trials. We are excited that our new
enhanced services will now allow our customers to participate in the growth of
clinical trials in Asia, freed from the problems and difficulties of exporting
blood samples out of China."
The Beijing facility will be managed by Susan Sun, who recently joined
Quintiles.
The company also announced that QLAB in China will apply for accreditation
from the College of American Pathologists (CAP) by early 2006. Currently QLAB
facilities in Singapore; Atlanta, Ga., US; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Pretoria,
SA, are all CAP certified.
