PITTSBURGH, June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Vincent W. Locher, regional
president of Sky Bank, Jay Yard, senior vice president, marketing and
communications for Parker/Hunter Incorporated and Dr. Frederick Winter, dean
of the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh,
officially dedicated the Sky Bank Center for Economic Education at a ceremony
held at Mervis Hall.
The Center, an affiliate of EconomicsPennsylvania, the largest statewide
not-for-profit economic education and financial literacy organization in the
Commonwealth, is funded by a $450,000 grant from Sky Bank and becomes the 14th
individual center in the EconomicsPennsylvania Network. Mr. Yard serves as
chair of the Western Region Board for EconomicsPennsylvania and has a long
history of involvement with the Katz School.
Sky Bank funds will be used to help underwrite program costs that include
workshops and seminars for teachers; activities for students and parents;
educational materials; the creation and development of new programs; and the
operations of the Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
This Center serves as a resource for school districts, school
administrators, teachers and parents who understand the importance of teaching
children about financial literacy. "From this point on, the Sky Bank Center
becomes the primary resource facility for our work throughout the Pittsburgh
community," said Jay Yard, of Parker/Hunter. Dr. Frederick Winter, dean of the
Katz School called the Sky Bank commitment an "excellent example of community
commitment and corporate philanthropy."
Sky Bank's decision to partner with EconomicsPennsylvania was based on its
track record of success coupled with the compatibility of its mission -- to
promote and encourage understanding of financial literacy -- with Sky Bank's
philanthropic objectives. "We were very impressed with the program, its
delivery system and impact, and concluded that it would be a wise investment
on behalf of our home community. We anticipate a very long and successful
relationship," added Vincent W. Locher.
Academic activities and programs provided to Pittsburgh area school
districts through the Sky Bank Center for Economic Education will be
coordinated by Dr. Dung Nguyen, economics professor, assisted by professional
staff members of EconomicsPennsylvania. Additional information may be obtained
