Telcos Can Use High-Speed Fiber-to-the-Home Connections and Streamaster
Set-Top to Deliver Digital Video and Internet Services to Consumers
AUSTIN, Texas, and MINNEAPOLIS, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Network service
providers with fiber-to-the-home networks can now offer customers an advanced
set-top system for enjoying a wide range of consumer broadband multimedia
services such as digital-quality broadcast television, high-speed Web access,
2-D and 3-D games, video and music-on-demand and on-line shopping. Optical
Solutions Inc. and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) have collaborated on a
comprehensive broadband home entertainment solution with the Motorola
Streamaster(TM) multimedia set-top system and Optical Solutions FiberPath(R)
400 fiber-to-the-home system.
Optical Solutions Inc. will demonstrate the FiberPath 400 system using the
Streamaster platform at the SUPERCOMM 2001 industry trade show in Atlanta
June 5-7 in Optical Solutions Booth #7468.
With this solution, service providers may offer consumers the best of
high-speed fiber connections along with the platform to deliver seamless
streaming IP video, games and Internet services to computers, televisions and
other devices throughout the home.
"Telecommunications service providers that are extending broadband fiber
connections all the way to the home have had limited options for providing
consumers with a set-top system," said Bill Muscato, product marketing
manager, Motorola. "By embracing fiber optic support, the Streamaster
platform completes the residential offering, enhancing the way that consumers
use broadband communication and entertainment services at home."
"Companies like Motorola recognize the enormous potential of a direct
fiber-to-the-home connection," said Darryl Ponder, Chairman and CEO of Optical
Solutions. "With the FiberPath-Streamaster infrastructure in place, we're
paving the way for service providers to deliver entertainment and other
content-rich applications to America's living rooms."
About Streamaster
As one of a new breed of advanced TV set-top systems, Streamaster targets
telecommunication carriers and other DSL network service providers wishing to
enhance revenues and fend off competition by delivering convergent voice,
video and data services to consumers. Streamaster, which was developed within
Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector, gains its intelligence through
DigitalDNA(TM) technology.
About FiberPath
Using next generation FiberPath systems, service providers can deliver
Internet access at up to 100 Mbps, plus streaming IP video, hundreds of analog
and digital CATV channels, and telephony services.
FiberPath 400 is a complete equipment, networking and service solution.
It features the FiberDrive(TM) head-end bay, a passive optical network, and a
broadly patented subscriber premise node, FiberPoint(TM). FiberDrive
functions as a transport system, taking voice, video and data feeds from the
service provider's central office, and transforming them to digital signals
that are launched optically to subscribers via a passive optical network. At
the customer premise, FiberPoint units convert the optical signals to
electrical signals compatible with existing home wiring for telephone, data
and television services.
About Motorola
Motorola, Inc. is a global leader in providing integrated communications
