PITTSBURGH, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- PENNDOT invites families to take part
in the excitement surrounding the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel construction
project by stopping by to paint a tunnel tile at the PENNDOT booth during the
annual Pittsburgh Arts Festival. The PENNDOT booth, located in the Children's
Area, is open on June 8 and 9 between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m.
"The bridge and tunnel are a work of art," said Dick Skrinjar, PENNDOT
spokesman. "Given the proximity to the project, the Arts Festival is an
opportunity for kids to take home a little piece of construction history while
participating in the festivities."
The 4"x4" tiles are similar to those currently being restored in the Fort
Pitt Tunnel. Children can paint a tile and keep it as a memento of one of the
largest road construction projects in the nation.
While children paint their own works of art, parents can enter to win a
chance to watch this year's Fourth of July fireworks display high above the
city from the observation deck of the Fort Pitt Tunnel. A random drawing on
June 28, 2002 will determine the winner.
The outbound lanes of the Fort Pitt Bridge and Tunnel are currently being
reconstructed and are scheduled to re-open August 31, 2002.
