Content Filtering From SurfControl Now Viewed as Essential
In Heightened IT Security Environment
WASHINGTON, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- SurfControl (London: SRF)
(Nasdaq Europe: SRFC), the world's number one Web and e-mail filtering
company, announced today that it has enhanced its focus on the federal
marketplace with the hiring of additional sales and technical staff to support
an expanding network of experienced government resellers and a growing
customer base in the federal sector.
The company's enhanced focus is in response to an increased awareness
among federal buyers that content filtering is an essential element of IT
security plans, particularly within the context of homeland defense. By 2008,
the federal government will spend almost $6 billion on information security,
an increase of about 43 percent over 2003's $4.2 billion, according to a new
report by Input, a Reston, Va.-based research firm.
"Government agencies are, naturally, more aware of IT security than ever
before and are turning to SurfControl in record numbers to provide the best
Web and e-mail filtering technology and the only total solution to content
security," said SurfControl CEO Steve Purdham, speaking this week at the E-Gov
2003 Conference in Washington, D.C. "To keep up with the demand, we've added
both sales and engineering staff and dedicated them to helping our federal
customers."
Purdham noted that all electronic communications carry risks in the form
of e-mail borne viruses, the disclosure of confidential information,
productivity, legal liability and squandered bandwidth. SurfControl helps
companies control these risks and track the use of network resources.
SurfControl's customers in the federal sector include the U.S. Bureau of
Reclamation, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Department of Energy, U.S.
Department of State, U.S. Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Navy, U.S. Department
of Veteran's Affairs and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
The company also enjoys a significant base of customers among state and
local government entities such as the State of North Dakota, State of Kansas,
State of Ohio, Cities of Oceanside and South San Francisco and hundreds more.
"Many of SurfControl's federal customers already benefit from the expert
knowledge and advice of outstanding resellers like Halifax and True North
Solutions," said Wayne Bergland, Vice President of Major Accounts and Federal
Government Sales. "By adding experienced federal sales and systems
engineering professionals, we can enhance the resources available to
government customers."
In addition to adding more government customers, resellers and staff,
SurfControl also recently introduced a new product for enterprises wanting to
control Instant Messaging and Peer-to-Peer file sharing. SurfControl Instant
Message Filter enables companies and government agencies to intelligently
control the risks of unauthorized use of public IM and P2P.
IM is already a common communications medium in 80 percent of American
enterprises, but most IM is used by employees without the knowledge or
permission of IT administrators, according to Osterman Research. The amount
of IM traffic is expected to increase to 4.3 million instant messages each
day, or more than 130 percent per year through 2004, according to the analyst
firm of IDC.
The instant message and peer-to-peer filter is the first such product
offered by SurfControl, a company whose rapid growth in the Web and e-mail
filtering market has been fueled by its ability to combine artificial
intelligence and next-generation technologies to provide a total content
security management solution.
CEO Purdham will be discussing how these technology tools can help
increase the security of government networks during his talk at E-Gov 2003.
Purdham will speak on the panel, Tools for Critical Infrastructure Protection
and Vulnerability Assessment, Tuesday, June 10 as part of E-Gov's Making
Technology Work for Homeland Security presentation track. This conference is
an annual forum for thousands of government and industry professionals to
discuss strategies, new technologies and solutions for the public sector. The
conference is a venue for public sector managers, IT executives and others
working to improve government operations and service delivery in a digital
economy.
