Tellabs Demonstrates GPON for Interactive, High-Bandwidth Service Delivery

NAPERVILLE, Ill., June 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Service providers
can soon offer interactive, high-bandwidth services faster and more
efficiently with Tellabs' new Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON)
capabilities. Tellabs is demonstrating these capabilities at the Tellabs
booth (#27040) at GLOBALCOMM 2006.
Tellabs' GPON products deliver up to 2.4 Gigabits-per-second (Gbps)
downstream and up to 1.2 Gbps upstream. These speeds enable the delivery of
high-quality bundled voice, video and data services as part of the
Tellabs(R) DynamicHome(SM) Solution.
"Video distribution is seen by many service providers as a competitive
trump card," said Michael Arden, principal analyst, broadband and
multimedia research, for ABI Research. "With its increased speed and
ability to support advanced, interactive video services, GPON deployment is
top of mind with service providers worldwide as they race to deploy
next-generation Telco TV."
The Tellabs(R) 8865 next-generation GPON optical line terminal (OLT)
transforms carrier access networks. Based upon the hardware-centric
architecture of the Tellabs 8800 multi-service router series, the Tellabs
8865 OLT pushes subscriber-centric, service-aware intelligence and
quality-of-service (QoS) all the way to the home. The Tellabs 8865 OLT
enables carriers to rapidly deploy, control and differentiate
revenue-generating services like interactive video. With integrated service
edge router functionality, multiple 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps uplinks, and support
for nearly 4,000 GPON optical network terminals (ONTs), the Tellabs 8865
consolidates multiple network elements, improves network scalability and
creates a foundation for continuous service evolution for high-bandwidth,
high-density GPON applications.
With installation of a new GPON line module, the Tellabs(R) 1000
multiservice access series offers simple and cost-effective migration to
GPON from Broadband Passive Optical Network (BPON), Digital Subscriber Line
(DSL) or Digital Loop Carrier (DLC) technologies. At the subscriber
premises, the Tellabs(R) 1600-712 GPON ONT supports residential voice,
high-speed data, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and cable television
in a single, cost-effective unit.
"Consumers and businesses demand more from the Internet," said Carl
DeWilde, executive vice president of broadband products for Tellabs. "They
want personalized, on-demand applications, greater entertainment choices
and reliable data. As the market leader in PON and deep-fiber access
solutions, service providers can count on Tellabs to help them meet these
demands cost-effectively and reliably."
