- Longest Running Global Program Pays Tribute to Individuals and
Organizations that Use Information Technology to Benefit Society-
ATLANTA, June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth (NYSE: BLS) today announced
that it is a recipient of the 2006 21st Century Achievement Award presented
by the prestigious IDG Computerworld Honors Program. The company received
the award for its AMBER Alert Field Notification program that includes
partnerships with state law enforcement agencies throughout the Southeast.
Through BellSouth's own field dispatch system and the state law
agencies, AMBER alerts from the nine-state region are distributed to more
than 13,000 technicians in the field. BellSouth, through its employee
intranet and the public Internet, also distributes the alerts to its more
than 60,000 employees, 100,000 Pioneers and millions of customers through
its BellSouth Internet services home page.
"This award recognizes the partnerships we've established with state
law enforcement agencies," said Rod Odom, president, Network Services for
BellSouth. "In addition, it recognizes the BellSouth team that found a
unique and significant way to use available technology and our entire
BellSouth family to serve the community. We graciously accept the 21st
Century Achievement Award presented by the Computerworld Honors Program on
behalf of our employees, retirees and customers who help watch over and
protect our children."
Under its notification process, BellSouth uses its dispatch system to
transmit AMBER Alerts, by state, to its technicians over an Internet
Protocol link and a wireless data radio network that delivers the alerts on
wireless laptop PCs. The technicians are notified of the alert via pagers
and whenever they transact business on their laptops. Since BellSouth
launched its system in 2003, nearly 100 alerts from across the Southeast
have been distributed to the field.
"The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was also
instrumental in helping BellSouth with its AMBER Alert notification
system," added Odom. "Without their support, our system and the subsequent
recognition by Computerworld would not have been possible."
BellSouth has shared information and processes regarding its
notification system with other companies in the telecommunications
industry, including Cingular Wireless. BellSouth Intellectual Property
Marketing Corporation (BIPMARK) will offer a royalty-free intellectual
property license on this patented innovation to organizations with a field
workforce, enabling them to establish a similar notification process within
their own organization.
"Each year, the Computerworld Honors Program seeks to recognize
organizations, from a variety of sectors, for their ongoing efforts to
utilize technology in order to benefit society," said Bob Carrigan,
Chairman of the Computerworld Honors Program Chairmen's committee and
President, IDG Communications. "We are proud to provide a platform to
publicly acknowledge these contributions."
For almost two decades, Computerworld Honors has acknowledged those
individuals and organizations that have used information technology to
benefit society. This year's honorees were commemorated during the 18th
Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Glad Awards Evening on June 5, 2006 at
the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C.
