FPL Energy Completes Doswell Power Plant Expansion

JUNO BEACH, Fla., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of
FPL Group (NYSE: FPL), today announced the commercial startup of a
171-megawatt expansion of its Doswell combined-cycle electric generation
facility in Ashland, Virginia.
With completion of the new generating unit, FPL Energy's Doswell facility
will have the capacity to produce 879 megawatts of power -- enough electricity
to supply 800,000 Virginia homes. The simple-cycle expansion will function as
a peaking unit to be used during times of heaviest electricity demand.
Virginia Power will purchase the output under a multi-year agreement.
"We're extremely pleased to be up and running our new peaking facility.
We started this project exactly one year ago and completed it right on
schedule. The expanded capacity gives us greater flexibility to meet the
growing electrical power needs of our customers," said Manny Sanchez, FPL
Energy's Doswell plant manager.
The unit can also be converted to a combined-cycle unit at a later time
should market demand warrant a future expansion. Utilizing state-of-the-art
emissions reduction technology and very low-sulfur fuels, the combustion
turbine is an environmentally sound solution to providing needed electric
power to the region.
In addition to meeting increasing electricity demands, the expansion also
provides economic benefits to the community from additional property tax
payments for the life of the power plant.
FPL Energy is a leading independent producer of clean energy, including
natural gas, wind, solar and hydroelectric. It owns and operates power plants
with more than 4,300 total net megawatts in 13 states across the country. The
company has announced new projects that will add another 5,500 megawatts to
its portfolio by the end of 2003. Projects representing more than half of the
expanded capacity are already under construction.
FPL Group, with annual revenues of more than $7 billion, is one of the
nation's largest providers of electricity-related services. FPL Group's
principal subsidiary is Florida Power & Light Company, one of the nation's
largest electric utilities, serving approximately 3.9 million customer
accounts in Florida. Additional information is available on the Internet at
