From the Teen's Room to the Living Room, Scientific-Atlanta is Bringing the Interactive Experience Home at NCTA Cable 2001

New Interactive Technologies On Display In Booth #3100 at McCormick Place
                         Convention Center in Chicago

ATLANTA, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the NCTA Cable 2001 in Chicago next
week, Scientific-Atlanta will showcase its interactive strategy at work. By
unveiling new interactive TV applications and technologies on-board its
digital interactive network and Explorer(R) digital interactive set-tops,
Scientific-Atlanta will empower cable operators with a distinct competitive
advantage over satellite, that will keep their subscribers coming back for
more.
In its booth, Scientific-Atlanta will present its set-top strategy
demonstrating how consumers will be able to use multiple Explorer digital
interactive set-tops as network computers, home gateways, and home media
servers, in the home to satisfy many of their information, communication and
entertainment needs. Because each Explorer set-top, including the more than 6
million already shipped, operates on an integrated IP-based digital network
and is capable of running multiple interactive applications, a family can
incorporate different Explorer models into their home for a networked
experience. From the home office to the teenager's bedroom (minus the piles of
dirty clothes on the floor), Scientific-Atlanta will showcase the power of
home networking.

    Thinking Outside the Box
Scientific-Atlanta Chairman, CEO and President Jim McDonald will outline
the company's set-top strategy and interactive vision during the Cable 2001
set-top panel discussion, "It Slices, It Dices, It Makes Mounds of Digital
Fries: The Set-top Box of the Future," on Monday, June 11, 2001, at 11:00 a.m.
in Room N426 of the Convention Center.
Scientific-Atlanta will demonstrate and display its current family of
Explorer digital interactive set-tops, including the Explorer 2100 and 3100
that function as network computers, the recently introduced Explorer 3100HD
set-top to support high-definition broadcasts and the new Explorer 4100 home
gateway designed to support wired and wireless connectivity, the 4000DVB
designed to meet European standards, and the Explorer 8000 home media server,
which features a hard drive. Demonstrations, using a live digital headend,
will allow participants to surf the web and download MP3s from the Explorer
8000 home media server. Underscoring the importance of the digital
interactive set-top in the home, Scientific-Atlanta will take the lead in
showing how cable operators can support the living rooms of the not-so-distant
future using these set-tops along with other home electronics devices, such as
a laptop computer, telephone, video pad, and a PDA.
Sam Russ, manager of advanced technologies for research and development at
Scientific-Atlanta will present "Home Networking: Extending Cable's Reach" on
Monday, June 11, 2001, at 4:00 p.m. in Room S501D in the Convention Center.
Scientific-Atlanta understands that it takes more than one interactive
application for cable operators to keep their subscribers attention, reduce
churn and increase operator revenues. Using Explorer digital interactive set-
tops and a digital interactive network, show participants will be able to
chat, e-mail, surf the Internet, play games, and access relevant information
simultaneously along with access to these new innovations:
    * Scientific-Atlanta will introduce its new InView(TM) interactive
application, an information-on-demand service that cable operators can
tailor to the information preferences of their subscribers.
    * Furthering the development of the Scientific-Atlanta Resident
Application, SARA, new features including a Spanish language version
will be demonstrated on board the Explorer platform.

Demonstrating the advantages over DSL, Scientific-Atlanta will display its
WebSTAR(TM) cable modem family for high-speed data services and introduce the
WebSTAR DPH213. The new model is equipped with Ethernet, USB and dual phone
lines with integrated voice over IP (VoIP) and HPNA 2.0 for home networking.
WebSTAR's lightning speed access to the Internet enables cable subscribers to
save time surpassing a dial-up connection, while cable operators reap the
revenue benefits of providing their customers with a cost-effective, efficient
and reliable modem service. Multiple users can also be connected to the
WebSTAR cable modem through the Ethernet port making it a cost-effective
solution for home or office networked environments.

    Execution is the Key
Scientific-Atlanta realizes the challenges faced by cable operators in
deploying, upgrading and supporting their digital interactive networks.
SciCare(TM) Broadband Services will be at Cable 2001 to demonstrate its
expertise in providing end-to-end services to cable operators for the
preparation and maintenance of preparing their networks for interactive TV.
Cable operators recognize the value of these services and are coming to
SciCare for the know-how in design, delivery, installation, launch and post-
launch support. SciCare's process driven approach, streamlined and enhanced
through installing and launching over 250 digital broadband delivery systems
(DBDS), allows cable operators to focus on daily tasks while their network
launches are in sure hands.
Complimenting SciCare's role in these DBDS deployments is its experience
of launching interactive applications at over 40 sites. Today's cable
operators are under extreme pressure to launch new interactive services. They
can now level the playing field with SciCare execution. The opportunities are
numerous, but the capital expenses, complex deployment schedules and staffing
additions typically required can be daunting. Next week, Scientific-Atlanta
will unveil its Application Service Provider (ASP) solution for interactive
application rollout. The ASP solution is a full service deployment, hosting,
management and delivery of interactive applications from the centrally managed
Scientific-Atlanta Services Bureau.
SciCare's success of assessing cable operators digital network and
associated personnel operations is proven in more than 40 assessments.
SciCare's Operation Assessment team has revealed "quick" fixes with upside
cost avoidance and revenue accrual for cable operators in the millions of
dollars.
SciCare will also be at NCTA Cable 2001 to demonstrate its latest set of
operational efficiency tools, known as SciConnect(TM), to allow Scientific-
Atlanta customers with a Network Service Agreement to view real-time
customized network information. The SciConnect system, which will be
available to Network Service Agreement customers in late July, performs system
checks, examines system performance history, and remotely connects to cable
system sites to display DNCS screens and more. SciConnect demonstrations are
by appointment only.

    IP Hungry World
It's an IP world -- and getting bigger. Higher throughput and improved
access are just two of the benefits of a packet-based digital interactive
network. At Cable 2001, Scientific-Atlanta is bringing the interactive
experience home with its showcase Prisma IP(TM) platform. The newest and most
exciting of Scientific-Atlanta's solutions for quenching that IP appetite,
Prisma IP is the high-bandwidth multi-service platform that has the advantages
of circuit switched networks using the economies of packet-based solutions.
Scientific-Atlanta will also display its GainMaker(TM) Deep Fiber Node
that gives customers an easy, convenient and cost effective product for fiber
deep needs with simple lid switch upgrades from amp to node.
Scientific-Atlanta is recognized as an expert in network architectures,
demonstrating that broadband technology expertise at Cable 2001:
    * Paul Connolly, vice president of network architectures for Scientific-
Atlanta, will present "New Class Carrier Architecture Bust Bandwidth
Blues," on Monday, June 11, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in Room S501A in the
       Convention Center.
    * During the same session, Donald Sorenson, Scientific-Atlanta's manager
of advanced access planning will discuss "Transition Strategies:
Synchronizing Deep Fiber Baseband Access Network Design with Advanced
HFC Infrastructure," on Monday, June 11, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. in
Room S501A in the Convention Center.
    * Greg Hardy, vice president and general manager digital transport,
transmission network systems for Scientific-Atlanta will present "IP
Transport Technology in the Primary Ring Network," on Monday, June 11,
2001, at 11:00 a.m. in Room S501D in the Convention Center.
    * Bob Collmus, Scientific-Atlanta's director, product line management for
transmission, will present "New Rules, New Tools:" on Tuesday, June 12,
2001, at 11:00 a.m. in Room S501A in the Convention Center.

    Grooming in the Headend
With more digital channels available than ever before, including off-air
HDTV services, cable operators have to "groom" or adapt the digital channel
lineup in every headend -- adding or dropping programs to best fit the
bandwidth available and to satisfy subscriber viewing preferences.
Scientific-Atlanta will demonstrate a cost-effective and space efficient
grooming solution, using the PowerVu(R) BitMizer(TM) multiplexer and the MQAM
Modulator.
The PowerVu BitMizer multiplexer is a high performance MPEG-2 packet
multiplexer that supports both DVB-ASI and DHEI formats, supports statistical
re-multiplexing of both standard definition and high definition signals, and
is the only multiplexer capable of grooming sufficient output capacity to
fully drive the Scientific-Atlanta(R) MQAM from a single device. The MQAM
Modulator is a single rack unit device that can be located in the headend or
the hub, produces up to four RF QAM channels and is controlled by the Digital
Network Control System (DNCS).
