Fort James Designates Chicago Suburb As Corporate Headquarters

DEERFIELD, Ill., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Fort James Corporation (NYSE: FJ)
announced today that it is changing the designation of its corporate
headquarters from Richmond, VA, to the Chicago suburb of Deerfield, IL, where
it has maintained its executive headquarters since the company was formed by
the merger of James River and Fort Howard in August, 1997.
"We chose the Chicago area for our executive headquarters because it was
centrally located to our many domestic facilities and convenient to a major
international airport," said Miles Marsh, chairman and chief executive officer
of Fort James. "With the senior management team and many key functions now
located in Deerfield, it makes sense to combine our executive and corporate
headquarters," he added.
In emphasizing that Fort James will continue to have a presence in
Richmond, the Fort James Foundation has pledged $1 million dollars in support
of Richmond's Canal Walk. The funding is designed to preserve Richmond's rich
heritage and to promote tourism and economic development.
In addition to the $1 million contribution, Fort James will maintain all
of the commitments it has made to civic and charitable groups in Richmond and
will continue to retain its leadership role as a corporate sponsor of
community activities. Fort James will continue to employ approximately 250
people at its Richmond offices.
Fort James is a leading international consumer products company, serving
consumers both at home and away-from-home with bathroom and facial tissue,
paper towels, napkins and cups, plates, cutlery and food wrap products. The
company's popular brands include QUILTED NORTHERN, BRAWNY, DIXIE, VANITY FAIR,
MARDI GRAS, GREEN FOREST, SOFT'N GENTLE AND SO-DRI in North America and LOTUS,
TENDERLY, COLHOGAR AND KITTENSOFT in Europe. Fort James also produces folding
cartons for packaging food and pharmaceuticals and communications papers such
as printing, publishing and office copy paper. With annual sales of
$7.2 billion dollars, the company has approximately 28,000 employees and more
than 60 manufacturing facilities in the United States and 15 other countries
around the world.
