IndyCar Series drivers will join local Humana leaders in visits to area
children's hospitals
LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Racing For Kids (R) announced
today that Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation's largest publicly
traded health benefits companies, has agreed to be the 2005 title sponsor of
the Detroit-based international charity.
"We welcome Humana into the Racing For Kids(R) family," said Dr. William
W. Pinsky, Racing For Kids' founder and president. "Because of Humana we will
be able to brighten the day for the thousands of hospitalized children our
celebrity race drivers will visit this year. We are very thankful for Humana's
support."
"Humana is honored to sponsor Racing For Kids," said Michael B.
McCallister, Humana's president and chief executive officer. "We have been
working to improve health care for children for more than 40 years, and Racing
For Kids is an exciting and unique approach to lifting the spirits of young
hospital patients."
For its support, Humana will be publicly recognized as title sponsor in
all Racing For Kids(R) public relations, marketing and fund raising efforts as
well as in joint programs with other charities. Its representatives will make
hospital visits with the Racing for Kids(R) drivers.
Humana's support will help underwrite the costs associated with the
celebrity driver hospital visits and the racing memorabilia given to each
child visited.
Founded in Detroit in 1989, Racing For Kids(R) uses the popularity of
motor sports to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of
children.
The heart of its program is the hospital visits that Racing For Kids(R)
racers make to sick children wherever they race. During these visits, the
drivers meet with children individually, talk about their passion for racing,
and hand out colorful Racing For Kids(R) baseball caps as well as sign
autographs and pose for pictures. Racing For Kids(R) public relations
specialists work with each hospital to generate media attention for the
hospital related to the drivers' visits.
"These visits are a very important part of each child's recovery therapy,"
said Dr. Pinsky. "They take a child's mind away from his or her illness to
focus on the excitement of meeting a racecar driver and hearing about our
high-speed sport. It is an established fact in the medical community that
these visits help sick children get better faster."
The 2005 team of Racing For Kids(R) celebrity drivers includes retired
IndyCar(R) Series driver Robbie Buhl as national spokesperson; current
IndyCar(R) Series drivers Roger Yasukawa and Felipe Giaffone; Infiniti Pro
Series driver Michael Abbott; and Daniel Herrington, a driver for the Formula
BMW USA Series.
Joining Humana as major sponsors of Racing For Kids(R) in 2005 will be
sanofi-aventis, the Bridgestone-Firestone Foundation, Toyota Motorsports USA
and Benson Ford, Jr.
