The Immune Response Corporation and Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Announce ACTG Study Update

CARLSBAD, Calif. and LA JOLLA, Calif., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Immune
Response Corporation (Nasdaq: IMNR) and Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today
announced that they have been informed by the AIDS Clinical Trials Group
(ACTG) that enrollment in the 96 week, randomized, double-blind, adjuvant-
controlled study, previously announced on May 10, 2000, has been halted while
it reviews protocol changes. The 131 participants already enrolled in the
study will continue to be followed under the current version until a new
protocol can be developed. The study protocol team has also informed The
Immune Response Corporation and Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. that the revised
study protocol is expected to be developed quickly.
The ACTG noted that REMUNE remains a safe way of inducing large helper
T cell responses to HIV antigens. The study was designed to answer the
scientific question of whether vaccine-induced immune responses could aid in
the control of HIV, and the practical question of whether this intervention
could prolong the efficacy of potent antiretroviral therapy.
REMUNE is under study in several other clinical trials, including pivotal
registration trials in the U.S., Europe and the recently completed trial in
Thailand. In addition, the National Institutes of Health is currently
sponsoring other trials of REMUNE in adults and children.
