* * * Any Brand of PC Accepted * * *
BETHESDA, Md., and SAN DIEGO, June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Starting tomorrow,
consumers will have an opportunity to upgrade their computer while also
contributing to their community. Gateway Country stores will give a
$100 discount off a new PC to anyone who donates a functioning, 386-class or
better computer -- of any brand -- to Goodwill.
"Through this program, Gateway is helping us provide easy access to
technology for individuals with little access," said Fred Grandy, President
and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. "Every day, Goodwill drives
'information have-nots' to the information superhighway, and helps them cross
the digital divide."
Consumers can donate any manufacturer's 386-class or better computer in
working condition to their local Goodwill donation center. Their donation
receipt is redeemable at Gateway Country stores for a $100 discount off any
system from Gateway's consumer line. The discount applies to PCs only.
"Technology has changed the way we live, learn, work and play," said Cliff
Holtz, senior vice president of Gateway's Consumer division. "This unique
program will give people two very good reasons to upgrade their system -- an
opportunity to help people plus the chance to get a significant discount on a
new Gateway system."
Donated computers will be used in Goodwill's job training and computer
centers. Computers that are not incorporated in Goodwill programs will be
sold in Goodwill retail stores or recycled at Goodwill computer recycling
centers. The agency channels 84% of its revenues directly into its programs.
Goodwill agencies in many cities provide free computer access to their
communities, allowing children, adults and seniors to plug into educational,
employment and support services outside their communities. At Goodwill
computer centers, individuals of all ages can conduct online job searches,
write resumes and letters, or simply surf the Internet. Recently, the U.S.
Department of Education awarded a $750,000 grant to Goodwill to expand an
existing community technology center in Astoria, N.Y. and replicate its
success in Rockford, Ill.
Gateway Country operates more than 260 stores nationwide. A complete
