NEW YORK, June 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thanks to its many
supporters, including children, corporations, faith-based organizations,
foundations and individuals, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF has successfully
raised nearly $4 million in aid for the children left devastated by Cyclone
Nargis in Myanmar. With these funds, UNICEF has been able to ensure the
survival and protection of these children and their families in severely
affected Yangon and Irrawaddy Delta areas.
Corporations who have generously donated to UNICEF's relief efforts
include Merrill Lynch & Co. Foundation, Inc. ($500,000), Wm. Wrigley Jr.
Company Foundation ($100,000), ITT ($100,000), Pfizer ($75,000), Marathon
Oil Corporation ($50,000), BD ($25,000) and Exelon ($25,000). Other
companies such as AstraZeneca, Hospira, Inc., Johnson & Johnson,
LyondellBasell, Motorola and UnitedHealth Group have encouraged their
employees to support Myanmar relief efforts by offering a match to
donations from each employee. In addition, companies including Causes (on
Facebook), Cisco, Coinstar, Inc., Delta Air Lines, Inc., Google, Hearst
Corporation, IKEA US, the NBA, Nortel, and Tommy Hilfiger are continuing to
encourage their customers, fans and employees to support UNICEF's relief
efforts.
Children as young as pre-school are getting in on the effort as well.
For example, a five-year old boy from Florida named Zack, together with his
mother, created a lemonade stand fundraiser to help benefit victims. He set
a goal of raising $200 but surpassed it, raising $319.
"Zack's commitment to the children of Myanmar reminds us that everyone
can join in the fight for child survival, and that every dollar donated to
UNICEF can help a child in need before, during or after a natural disaster
strikes," said Caryl Stern, President and CEO for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
Approximately 2.4 million people have been severely affected by the
cyclone, 40 percent of them children. Many are now homeless and exposed to
risks of disease. With $164 million to date, UNICEF has been able to supply
children not only with their most basic, immediate needs, such access to
clean drinking water, proper nutrition and shelter but also support for
Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS). Such spaces are essential to the welfare of
children living in extremely stressful conditions to ensure that children
feel safe and cared for, and also serve as recreation and temporary
learning spaces.
