Natural gas plant will help meet peak energy demand in Western U.S.
BALTIMORE, June 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Constellation Energy
(NYSE: CEG) today announced it has completed the purchase of the West
Valley gas-fired peaking plant near Salt Lake City, Utah, from a unit of
Iberdrola Renewables, Inc. Constellation Energy assumed ownership and began
operating the power plant earlier this month.
A 200-megawatt natural gas plant, the West Valley plant was owned by
West Valley Leasing Company, LLC., but has been leased to PacifiCorp since
the plant began commercial operation in 2002.
"Constellation Energy's purchase of the West Valley plant will help us
competitively meet some of the growing peak energy demands in the western
U.S. energy markets," said John Long, president of Constellation Power
Generation, a subsidiary of Constellation Energy. "The West Valley plant
provides Constellation Energy with a strategically located generation asset
in a key western market, the Salt Lake City area, which is a regional
energy center for electricity load. We're committed to operating this
facility as is the case with all of our other generating facilities -- with
a dedication to both safety and environmental stewardship."
The West Valley plant operates during peak demand periods, such as hot
summer and cold winter days. By permit design, the plant is limited to
operating a certain number of hours per year.
Constellation Energy also is a part owner and operator of the Sunnyside
Cogeneration plant, a power plant fueled by waste coal located outside
Price, Utah.
With the addition of West Valley, Constellation Energy now has
ownership interest in 30 power plants in six states. The company also has
two plants currently under construction: the Hillabee Energy Center, a
natural gas-fueled power project near Alexander City, Ala., which is
scheduled to go online in 2010; and the Grand Prairie Power Project in
Alberta, Canada, an 85-megawatt natural gas-fired peaking plant scheduled
to being operating later this year.
Constellation Energy (http://www.constellation.com), a FORTUNE 125
company with 2007 revenues of $21 billion, is the nation's largest
competitive supplier of electricity to large commercial and industrial
customers and the nation's largest wholesale power seller. Constellation

industries and utilities. It owns a diversified fleet of 78 generating
