In A Year When Schools Improved Across New York-
Edison Partnership Schools Outperformed Local Districts and the State
NEW YORK, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Edison Schools, the nation's leading
public school partner, announced today that achievement gains across all of
its New York based schools improved dramatically on the New York Statewide
Testing Program (NYSTP) in English Language Arts (ELA). These strong
achievement gains come in comparison to more moderate gains across New York
State.
All six Edison New York schools saw their scores rise on the NYSTP. The
average overall increase of students meeting or exceeding standards among
Edison students was 12 percentile points versus a statewide overall average of
5 percentile points. Edison fourth graders made a 17 percent overall average
improvement in comparison to an 8 percent increase for elementary schools
across all of New York.
"We are thrilled with the results of our New York partnership schools,"
said Chief Education Officer John Chubb. "Recently, the New York Times and New
York Post praised New York City's 'extraordinary gains.' We agree -- the city
of New York deserves credit for an outstanding year, showing historic academic
gains. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that Edison's fourth grade gains are
double those made by the state and significantly better than their local
districts. If gains by New York City and the state show that reforms are
working, then superior gains by our partnership schools show that Edison is
truly accelerating student progress. The very hard, diligent, and focused work
made by our New York administrators, teachers and students using the Edison
School Design is paying off in sustained and spectacular achievement progress
for our students."
Edison schools consistently outperformed, in terms of gains, the districts
where they are located. Among Edison's top performing New York schools is
Harriet Tubman Charter School located in the Bronx. Fourth graders at Harriet
Tubman made an extraordinary 22 percent one-year gain versus a 10 percent gain
by the New York City School District.
Stepping Stone Academy Charter School fourth graders made a substantial 19
percent one-year gain and Charter School for Applied Technologies achieved an
18 percent one-year gain versus a 5 percent gain by the Buffalo City District.
Riverhead Charter School fourth graders achieved a 17 percent one-year
gain versus a 5 percent gain by the Riverhead School District.
The Charter School of Science & Technology fourth graders recorded a
strong 17 percent gain versus a 15 percent gain by the Rochester district.
New Covenant Charter School fourth graders made a 10 percent gain versus a
9 percent gain by the Albany school district.
Each Edison New York partnership school easily outperformed the statewide
fourth grade average improvement of 8 percentile points.
