SDL to Supply High Speed Optical Modulators to SIEMENS Through 2001

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- SDL, Inc. (Nasdaq: SDLI) has
completed an agreement with SIEMENS Information and Communication Networks
Group to supply high-speed optical modulators for SIEMENS' 10 Gb/s dense
wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transmission systems. Optical
modulators are key components used in long distance fiber optic networks to
encode a high-speed data stream on laser light transmitted in these networks.
The use of high-speed optical modulators is expected to increase rapidly to
support the deployment of fiber optic networks operating at 10 Gb/s. This
agreement supports SIEMENS' 10 Gb/s DWDM deployment plan for years 2000 and
2001.
The optical modulators are manufactured by SDL Integrated Optics, Ltd., a
subsidiary of SDL Inc., located in the U.K. SDL has been working closely with
SIEMENS during the past year to supply high-speed modulators for the
qualification and successful production ramp of their 10 Gb/s DWDM fiber optic
transmission system. According to Michael Murphy, Marketing Manager of SDL
Integrated Optics, "This agreement results from a close working relationship
with SIEMENS, our technical expertise in high speed modulators, and our
ability to qualify and quickly ramp production of these high performance
products. SIEMENS is a key player in this market segment and we are delighted
to be associated with them. We believe the cooperation between the two
companies is key to enable rapid deployment of new bandwidth solutions for
voice, data and Internet traffic."
Harald Bachmann, Vice President of Purchasing, SIEMENS, stated, "Building
a close relationship on a preferred supplier strategy is one of the key
factors for our success in the worldwide transmission market. SDL has shown
that with the availability of new technologies, as well as the outstanding
support covering our technical and logistical needs, they are one of our major
suppliers for optical components. SDL will have a key role in supplying a
range of their products for SIEMENS systems."

    About SDL
SDL's products power the transmission of data, voice and Internet
information over fiber optic networks to meet the needs of telecommunications,
DWDM, cable television and satellite communications applications. They enable
customers to meet the bandwidth needs of increasing Internet, data, video and
voice traffic by expanding their fiber optic communications networks much more
quickly and efficiently than would be possible using conventional electronic
and optical technologies. SDL's optical products also serve a variety of non-
communications applications, including materials processing and printing.
