PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Small businesses
operating in coastal cities in the U.S. should follow the lead of
enterprise-class companies and back up their proprietary databases,
documents, and images in order to access mission-critical information and
resume work off-site during extended mandatory hurricane evacuations,
according to Guardian IT Services, a Florida-based firm.
Many small- and medium-sized businesses - unlike larger companies with
substantial IT budgets - often tend to overlook the need to back up their
mission-critical information, said Joshua Ward, Vice President of Guardian
IT Services. He added, however, that companies that overlook including IT
back- ups in their disaster-recovery plans generally run the risk of
encountering prolonged periods of operational downtime during evacuation
periods.
"The unfortunate truth is that many business owners only think about
backing up their data and files after something goes wrong," Ward said.
"They'll give us a call after their information is lost or when they hear
about another business having problems recovering critical information."
Guardian IT helps businesses save their mission-critical information
off- site at redundant servers in Austin, Texas, and Port Charlotte, Fla.,
and allows displaced business owners to retrieve data from their new
temporary facilities in approximately 24 to 36 hours. Business owners also
recover data from the servers if an employee inadvertently deletes a file
or if a power/computer hardware failure prevents them from accessing data.
Clients set up Guardian's IT back-up software in one sitting. Using a
Windows-based computer, an employee downloads back-up software from
Guardian's Website and installs it onto an on-site computer or server.
Clients install the software themselves, walk through the process with
Guardian by phone, or have Guardian install the software remotely using
Virtual Network Connection (VNC) technology.
The software performs automatic data back-ups daily. Guardian also
allows employees to transfer company data on a BitBackup basis, which
effectively allows them to only back up recent changes to a file rather
than re-saving an entire file each time a file is altered. The BitBackup
service reduces the time and cost for a company to upload data to
Guardian's servers and reduces storage-related costs.
Guardian's software uses blowfish-style encryption - which is often
used in the military - to transfer mission-critical data to off-site
servers. The encryptions help meet the financial industry's Sarbanes-Oxley
requirements, as well as the health industry's HIPAA standards.
Businesses can also retrieve lost, corrupted or inaccessible data
almost instantly with Local Data Storage back-ups. Guardian, for example,
provides businesses with an external hard drive for Local Data Storage,
which allows employees to take the hard drive with them during emergencies
or an evacuation. Employees access their data as soon as they connect the
external hard drive to a computer. Local Data Storage generally allows
employees to recover data within 12 hours.
From June through August, Guardian will offer businesses three months
of free remote back-up service. Details can be obtained at their website.
