SAN FRANCISCO, June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Endocrine Society, an
international association focused on endocrinological research and
practice, today hosted a teleconference for security analysts. The call
originated from ENDO 08, the annual conference of the Society, which is now
being held in San Francisco. The Society has over 14,000 members from 80
countries, many of whom attend the conference to report on the latest
advances in endocrine research and clinical care.
The purpose of today's call was to inform financial professionals that
follow healthcare and pharmaceutical companies of new research and
treatments. Among the news presented was:
-- The use of genome wide scans to learn the causes of human diseases such
as diabetes and obesity. This knowledge may provide new targets for
drug development to attack these diseases through new pathways.
-- A potential breakthrough in treating obesity with Tastants, substances
that can stimulate the sense of taste.
-- New developments in micro RNA's, which may provide novel therapies for
treating heart failure and cancer.
-- The groundbreaking use of stem cells to treat bone fractures.
-- Improved understanding of the role that chronic stress plays in
anxiety, depression and hypertension, and new ways to treat those
conditions.
-- Breakthrough research results on new hormones to treat menopausal
symptoms without increased breast cancer risk.
Dr. Keith L. Parker, Chair of the Annual Meeting Steering Committee for
ENDO 08, noted that, "Research and treatment advances in endocrinology are
powering significant advances in the fights against obesity, diabetes,
heart disease and cancer. The role of our Society is to integrate this
scientific research with medical practice, and to educate both the general
public and healthcare professionals about these advances."
