Awareness Week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),

NOAA reports an average of 20 million cloud-to-ground flashes have been
detected every year since 1989. The following tips can help protect
valuable electronic equipment against permanent damages caused by power
anomalies, such as lighting strikes:
    1. Protect crucial electronics from harmful high voltage, caused by power
fluctuations (surges or spikes), by selecting surge protectors with
       low-let-through voltage ratings.

    2. Ensure the safety of electronic equipment by selecting a surge
protector that protects all available surge paths, including
electrical cords, telephone cords, data lines and coaxial cables.

    3. Determine which devices would benefit from continued operation in the
event of a power outage and support that equipment with an
       uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

    4. Select a UPS model with the option to add extra battery units to
increase the runtime of critical devices.

    5. Use power management software to monitor the quality of power that
equipment is receiving and set up the ability to automatically and
gracefully shut down the system and applications running when a power
       failure occurs.

    6. Protect and manage structured wiring and home networking applications
with a UPS that enables remote management of home automation functions
and ensures protection in the event of a power outage.

    7. Maximize and protect valuable home theater equipment with a power
conditioner that also features surge protection, voltage regulation
       and noise filtering.

    8. For added peace of mind and insurance, select power protection
equipment that offers a lifetime guarantee against equipment damage.

    9. Choose power protection gear that is safety certified by UL, cUL, CSA
or other Nationally Recognized Test Lab (NRTL).

    10. Update or replace older power protection solutions in a safe and
        environmentally friendly way; please visit

During Lightning Safety Awareness Week the NWS provides topic overviews
for each day of the week including a lightning overview, scientific facts,
outdoor safety tips, indoor safety suggestions, and medical aspects related
to lightning. NOAA/NWS also partners with sports celebrities to create
public service announcements and other multimedia to stress the importance
of lightning safety. Visit http://www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/week.htm to
