Centennial Olympic Park Ceremony Honors All-America City Award Hopefuls

    ATLANTA, June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Thousands of representatives from 30
American communities will gather today in Centennial Olympic Park at 6:30 p.m.
to receive recognition for their contributions to civic excellence. Traveling
from all parts of the country, these American delegations are competing for
the honor of receiving the "2001 All-America City Award".
    Brenda Cornelius, Commissioner, Governor's Office of Human Relations for
the State of Georgia, will welcome the 30 finalist cities, citing their
contributions to making their communities a better place to live. The All-
America City Award is a program of the National Civic League, sponsored by
Allstate Insurance Company and hosted by DeKalb County and the City of
Atlanta, Georgia. DeKalb County and Atlanta are past recipients of the All-
America City Award.
    The welcome ceremony begins a three-day event, in which delegations will
have to present to a 12-member jury examples of their innovative programs and
local solutions that address a wide range of social and community issues,
including crime, education, poverty, housing and race relations.
    On the final day, Saturday, June 23, at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, the
National Civic League and Allstate Insurance Company will recognize the top 10
communities that demonstrate the most progress and innovation in the
successful resolution of critical community issues. The finalist communities
competing for the honor of being named a "Top 10" All-America City are (in
alphabetical order):

    Last year's All-America City Award winners were: Fresno, California;
Naugatuck River Valley, Connecticut; Worcester, Massachusetts; Montgomery
County, Maryland; Clinton, Missouri; Gastonia, North Carolina; Fargo/Moorhead,
North Dakota/Minnesota; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Anderson County, South
Carolina; and Edinburg, Texas.
    For over 52 years the All-America City Award has encouraged and recognized
civic excellence, honoring communities of all sizes (cities, towns, counties,
neighborhoods and regions) in which citizens, government, businesses and
voluntary organizations work together to address critical local issues.  The
All-America City Award recognizes exemplary grassroots community problem-
solving and is given to communities that cooperatively tackle challenges and
achieve results. Communities that teach the rest of us how to face difficult
situations and meet those challenges in innovative and collaborative ways can
become an All-America City.
