The Estee Lauder Companies Announces Senior Management Appointments

    NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Leonard A. Lauder, Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer of The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. (NYSE: EL), today
announced several key management appointments which will position the Company
for continued growth as it develops both established and new brands in world
markets.  All appointments are effective July 1, the start of the Company's
fiscal year.

    -- Daniel J. Brestle, President, Clinique USA & Canada, will be appointed
       President, Estee Lauder USA & Canada, succeeding Robin Burns, who has
       resigned from the Company to join The Limited, Inc.
    -- William P. Lauder, President, Origins Natural Resources Inc., will
       become President, Clinique USA & Canada, succeeding Mr. Brestle.
    -- Lynne Greene, Senior Vice President, Sales and Education, Origins, will
       be named Senior Vice President and General Manager, Origins Natural
       Resources Inc. succeeding William Lauder.

    Commenting on the appointments, Leonard Lauder said, "Dan Brestle is one
of our most experienced, broad-gauged managers who has developed Clinique into
one of our largest profit contributors.  He brings more than twenty years of
industry experience to his new position leading our flagship brand.

continue to build Clinique's momentum, Lynne Greene, who rejoined us in 1997,
brings expertise in every management aspect of our industry.  She has already
contributed significantly to Origin's success."
    As previously announced, Jeanette Sarkisian Wagner, currently President,
Estee Lauder International, Inc., will assume the title of Vice Chairman, The
Estee Lauder Companies Inc., also on July 1.  In this position, she will
provide management oversight for several of the Company's recent strategic
acquisitions, including jane and Aveda.
    In September, Patrick Bousquet-Chavanne will rejoin the company from
Parfums Christian Dior, and succeed Mrs. Wagner as President, Estee Lauder
International, Inc.  From 1989 through 1996 Mr. Bousquet-Chavanne held several
key positions in Estee Lauder's international sales and marketing operations.
    Robert A. Nielsen, President, Prescriptives Inc. and Aramis Inc., will
continue to manage those brands.  Also as previously announced, Pamela Baxter
will become Senior Vice President and General Manager, Aramis Inc., which
includes the fast growing Tommy Hilfiger line.
    John Demsey assumes his previously announced role as Managing Director,
Make-Up Art Cosmetics Ltd. (MAC), on July 1 working with Frank Toskan,
Founding Chairman and Creative Director.  Bobbi Brown essentials continues
under the management of Bobbi Brown and Rosalind Landis.
