European Study Shows Oxismart Technology Reduces Nuisance Alarms

ST. LOUIS, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study on continuous pulse
oximetry in the general surgical ward indicates Nellcor(R) Oxismart(R)
Advanced Signal Processing and Alarm Management Technology from Mallinckrodt
Inc. (NYSE: MKG) can reduce the frequency of false alarms.
Oxismart technology identifies and rejects artifacts that could otherwise
be mistaken for a pulse. It distinguishes between actual loss of pulse and a
pulse that is obscured by low perfusion, motion artifact, and electronic or
optical noise. This technology is currently in several Nellcor products --
including the Nellcor Symphony(R) N-3000 Pulse Oximeter, the NPB-290 Pulse
Oximeter and the NPB-295 Pulse Oximeter -- and is used by thousands of
clinicians worldwide.
Published in the May issue of Anaesthesia, the study was conducted in
Denmark at the Hvidovre University Hospital by Dr. J. Rosenberg, et al. It
concludes the N-3000 pulse oximeter may offer an advantage compared with
oximeters without this technology, because of the reduced frequency of alarms
and total time in alarm when monitoring patients in the general surgical ward.
With the Oxismart technology clearance from the FDA in 1995, the following
claims can be made:

-- Oxismart is intended for use on all patient populations, from neonatal
       to adult.
-- It has advanced signal processing and alarm management.
-- It can detect motion, reject artifact and provide a visual alert to the
       clinician of a motion environment.
-- It is designed to monitor in high motion, low perfusion patient
environments and in the presence of electronic or optical signal
       interference.

"Since its release in 1995, Oxismart technology has made safety monitoring
for hypoxemia more reliable and has achieved the goal of reducing nuisance
alarms," said Doris Engibous, Mallinckrodt's vice president of Oximetry.
"With this technology, clinicians can identify and manage hypoxemia on all
patient populations in any setting where pulse oximetry is used. This is why
Nellcor products are known as the oximetry you can trust."
