NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Newsday and Bloomberg were the big
winners last night at the Deadline Club's annual awards banquet in Times
Square.
Newsday, a large daily newspaper based in Long Island, won "Rube"
statuettes for spot news reporting, feature reporting, arts reporting and
information graphics. Bloomberg, a multimedia news agency founded by
businessman Michael Bloomberg, now the mayor of New York City captured
"Rubes" opinion writing; business news, series or investigative reporting;
radio feature reporting and magazine news, series or investigative
reporting.
The New York Times took home two of the Club's most prestigious awards
- the Daniel Pearl Award for Investigative Reporting for stories on village
and town court abuses, and the James Wright Brown Public Service Award for
stories on the nation's diabetes crisis.
The Herald News of New Jersey and BusinessWeek magazine took home two
awards each. Awards were given in 26 different categories; nearly 300
entries were submitted for judging.
This year's awards ceremony featured Bob Edwards, host of "The Bob
Edwards Show" on XM Public Radio and former longtime host of National
Public Radio's "Morning Edition." Each year, the Club awards scholarships
to college students and honors a high school journalism teacher for their
accomplishments in the journalism field.
The Deadline Club is the New York City chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists, one of the largest First Amendment advocacy
groups in the United States. The dinner ceremony, held this year at the
Marriott Marquis, recognizes exceptional journalism produced by newspapers,
wire services, online publications, magazines, radio and television that
have offices in the New York City metropolitan area during the previous
year.
