Supercharges Search Process, Giving Users Access to Multiple Search
Destinations & Utilities from One Search Box, Without an Open Browser
WALTHAM, Mass., June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Terra Lycos (Nasdaq: TRLY and Madrid Exchange: TRR), the largest global
Internet network, today announced the launch of the HotBot Quick-Search
Deskbar, one of the most powerful search tools available, allowing Web users
to save time by performing searches without an open browser. The HotBot
Quick-Search Deskbar also provides users with short-cuts to virtually any
desktop computer function.
Located at http://www.hotbot.com/tools/, the HotBot Quick-Search Deskbar
is based on the open source "Dave's Deskbar," a tiny textbox designed for
super searchers, allowing users to search while performing other desktop
functions like e-mail, word processing and more, without starting a Web
browser. By embracing the open source software approach, the HotBot Deskbar
will benefit from ongoing enhancements contributed by the hundreds of software
developers who have added functionality to the program.
The HotBot Deskbar further satisfies searchers' needs by giving them
access to more than 200 search sites, largely inaccessible by Web crawlers.
The HotBot Deskbar also makes other desktop tools and utilities including
instant messenger (IM), e-mail, calculators and more, accessible with simple
commands. The new HotBot Deskbar continues Lycos' commitment to search and
follows the December redesign of HotBot, delivering one of the most efficient
search experiences on the Web, providing speed, control and personalization
with a whole new clean and powerful index, making HotBot an essential tool for
serious searchers.
"The missing pieces in search today are flexibility and personalization,"
said Lincoln Jackson, senior director of search products for Terra Lycos.
"Our strategy with HotBot was to create an open platform that provides access
to the four largest search catalogs on the Internet, as well as providing an
interface that can be completely tailored to the users' preferences. With the
HotBot Deskbar, we're extending this concept further with an open platform
that leverages the strength of the search user community. The HotBot Deskbar
also allows searchers to go where crawlers are unable, behind often rich,
form-accessible databases of content."
In December 2002, Lycos relaunched its award-winning HotBot, introducing a
one-of-a-kind interface, giving users access to four of the biggest search
engines on the Internet: AlltheWeb, Google, Inktomi and Teoma. The
revolutionary HotBot interface allows users to go effortlessly from search
engine to search engine by typing in a search term once and retrieving the
search results of any of the four engines with just one click. Users can then
quickly preview the results from multiple search engines in one place, without
having to leave the site or switch between several search engines.
