PTC improves productivity by connecting engineering desktop with product
lifecycle management (PLM) services
NEEDHAM, Mass., June 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
PTC (Nasdaq: PMTC), the product development company(TM), today announced how
its use of Web services enables the creation of the world's first fully
integral product development system for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).
By using Web services to link Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire and Windchill, the two
engines of the PTC Product Development System, PTC continues to demonstrate
solution and architectural leadership in PLM.
As a result of this powerful Web services support, manufacturers benefit
from the ability to more easily support today's complex data exchange,
collaboration, and product development processes and greater flexibility to
meet future product development system requirements.
PTC achieved this breakthrough approach to product development in the
recent release of Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, the first CAD system to support Web
services and include an embedded Web browser. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire enables
manufacturers to significantly improve engineering productivity with seamless
connectivity to critical information and processes. For example, through
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire's powerful Web services, engineers can easily access
Windchill PDMLink and Windchill ProjectLink to perform everyday activities,
such as collaborating with colleagues on designs and controlling engineering
change processes, without leaving the design environment.
"PTC is continuing its role as a technology leader by delivering today on
the vision of Web services as the superior way to link distributed software
services," said Peter A. Bilello a Senior Consultant at CIMdata, a leading PLM
consulting and research firm. "Web services enable the PTC Product Development
System to be a unified product design environment where heterogeneous data can
be shared seamlessly between a variety of product development and lifecycle
management software applications. This provides customers with flexibility
and the confidence that PTC can continue to deliver a robust PLM
infrastructure well into the future, satisfying ever-changing business
requirements."
With Web services support since Release 6.0 in 2001, Windchill's Web
services capabilities dramatically lower the integration cost of collaboration
with PLM value chain participants including employees, partners, and
suppliers. Windchill Web services are used for pre-packaged integration with
Microsoft Office applications, and custom services can easily be integrated
with any type of Microsoft .NET or portal application. Windchill provides
support for HTTP/S (Hyper Text Transport Protocol / Secure), XML (eXtensible
Markup Language), SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol), and WSDL (Web Services
Description Language). Windchill 7.0 will also leverage industry-leading
commercial enterprise application interface (EAI) middleware, such as TIBCO,
via transactionally secure SOAP over JMS (Java Message Service), for robust
back end integration to other enterprise systems such as enterprise resource
planning (ERP), customer relationship management (CRM), and supply chain
management (SCM).
"Web services represent the next generation in integration architecture,"
said Jim Heppelmann, PTC Executive Vice President of Software Solutions and
Chief Product Officer. "Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire's support for Web services sets
a new standard for connectivity of CAD systems. Windchill, in turn, benefits
from a pure J2EE standards-based architecture that has always used Internet
protocols to communicate between application components. Incorporating Web
services was straightforward for Windchill, but may prove to be an
insurmountable revolutionary change for proprietary architectures."
